964 with mileage discrepancy and title stating "0 miles"
Hi All,
There is a 964 for sale that I'm interested in. However, there was a mileage discrepancy due to a faulty odometer being replaced early in the car's life. As a result, the Colorado title reads "0 miles". It is apparently all well documented with Porsche paperwork. The car is for sale here and on rennlist and I'm sure many of you have seen it. My question is how this should affect value. The seller has been trying to move it since February and I expect this issue is what's making buyers pause. Thanks in advance for your advice! |

You should have a ppi or go see that car first. Odometer alone and all the red on CARFAX is a serious devaluation , but there sure are other reasons this car hasn’t sold in a year, it was for sale before too.

You'll get the most help if you link the ad instead of making people go look for the car.

I know the car and was actually the person who pointed out to owner #2 back in 2014 that the odometer in the car is not the original odometer. I had the car in my possession for a short while and at least at that time it was a good and honest car. Owner #2 had the car for a long time and the odometer was replaced at the dealer very early in the cars life. I don't know the status of the title currently, but I have no doubts the mileage if not down to the exact mile is fairly correct. I don't know the current seller but would have no concerns about the car based on what I know about it. I would encourage any prospective buyer to have a PPI and make a decision based on that.

Thanks. I think I can be pretty confident that the car is what he says it is. What I am wondering about is what this issue will do to resale. My concern is that it will make it harder to move on from should I need to free up cash. Is there any basis to that concern?

I wouldn't be concerned. The documentation is there. But then I own a salvage title car and am not risk averse.

Car looks clean, IMO price is right, or nearly right. If you want a sorted, clean manual 964 C2 around 50k, you'll be hard pressed to find one without some type of story. For my money, title stories are better than accident or flood stories..
The big grey area is why the car hasn't sold yet. Buyers get weird about cars with any title issues. If you're going to hold for 10 years, who cares? I don't think the car will be as fluid as you'd like if you need to make a quick sale without getting a haircut. In the future - Nobody cares about title issues or mileage discrepancies on 356 or longhood cars. And the euro market doesn't care about title issues once the car hits a certain age and gets cheap to import. ..Without the title whosits the ad would fit in the "ostensibly high quality seller" thread. |

if that freaks you out go buy a Honda Civic. You probably shouldn't be owning air-cooled Porsches. You look at the condition, if that matches what you seek you buy it. Who cares what the mileage is.

If you are buying the car for an investment/resale find a no stories example from Holt or other reputable dealers or enthusiasts. If you are looking for a driver around $50k range that car looks like a nice example. 964s are on the up & up. A nice modded example with almost 100k miles sold for $70k today on BAT.

I am looking to do a 3.8 ITB hotrod build. I know that, to some extent, a hotrod build cleanses the car of it's past. I guess I'm wondering whether that would apply to a mild title issue like this one. |

Then that car seems like a solid base if you are planning on doing serious build. I don't think a mileage discrepancy in the past is really going to hold it back if you turn it into an crazy hotrod. Does the car have a clean title or is it branded in someway?
