Help with Value of a 1988 Targa
I do know a lot about these cars, but lately the market is so odd, I wanted to get the peanut gallery to say anything on price.
I have listed it here but nothing going on... It’s a very original 1988 Targa with red and black interior with 117,000 miles, kinda a generic color combo to some. Driver seats redone correctly. Not much paper work on the car but oil changes, no major engine work, but it’s good in that 2 owner car, with current owner since 1996 and it’s original paint, no accidents but needs buffed out I think. I never drove the car it’s a friend in the PCA. But claims no smoke or leaks, asking $42,500....I think Targa cars slowed down and the Cabs are tuff to sell but it’s a G50 car... He is kinda stuck on $42,5000, I think closer to $40k would make a nice car. The over 100k miles bother some with no engine work but he always maintains the car with oil changes and valve adjustments ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It will sell at that price - in six months. My price would be at $37.5K. Remember, it's now a 30-year-old car. That's great about the oil changes and all, but what about the rest of the stuff that's going to need doing? It's now November, it's a red Targa (it's the dream car of any male who was in their teens in the 1980s), and it's going to be a long winter. I believe he's $5K too high. I really like the car though. Red doesn't bother me as long as it runs and it doesn't have a tail...

Unfortunately G50s have even taken a hit in this market. I’d say 33-38. We are definitely in a temporary down-turn in the air-cooled market. Tim

Reality is someone will do a top end and maybe a lot more on this car. Add 7-20k somewhere down the road.
Thats just motor. Suspension and other wearable will come into play. Or, like some drive it till it breaks then fix. I am putting 20-25k into my 1988 911. At 155k mi time for engine rebuild, suspension and interior. Just a timing thing. 3.2s will need valve job and clutch at a minimum around this mileage. Great cars but at 30 years and 100k mi someone will be spending money on top of car purchase, in less already done. This said there are stories of 200k mi cars on original clutch and engine un touched.

Thx
Why is BaT good, I know on Pelican buyers seem to be more cautious and market understanding
BaT seems to lag on prices going down, because BaT started in a up market |

BaT is good if you want to get rid of it quick.
But if you do that, be SURE you're happy with the reserve that they'll make you set. Because a red, few records, non-rebuilt 120K mile Targa likely won't do all that great on BaT these days. Very, very unlikely to net over $40K. |

My guess is BaT would force a reserve in the mid to upper $20s. No more than $30K.

An '86 with the same miles is $36k
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1986-porsche-911-carrera-targa-7/ An '86 with 107k miles is $47k https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1986-porsche-911-carrera-targa-5/ So, $42k is right on the money. If he wants action, tell him to raise the price to $50k. These cars are rare as hell, and only going up in price to infinity.

If in needs a buff/polish tell him to get it done. Then get some decent pictures taken. Then list it on bat. People impulse buy the beautiful red targa of their childhood dreams, not a faded one.

Similar GR G50 targa sold for $50K way back "at the height of the market" in June at BAT.

OP you could try the car on BAT, but its not going to get 50k. Presentation quality is reflected in sale prices for commoner porsche models at BAT. Craigslist, hopefully you get a first timer. 38k is a very fair price, the next owners looking at a top end, plus a clutch if not more.

I am giving excellent and empirical advice.
I posted completed sales from BAT to arrive at a conclusion of $42k for a G50 YOU agreed seller will get asking price, yet, I am misleading people by saying the same exact thing? LMAO, WTF. Telling this seller $30k tops is the bad advice. Focus on those posts, not mine.

First of all it’s hard to convince anyone that the cars been truly cared for if it’s dirty. Start with a proper detail or adjust the price down accordingly to get some interest. Detailing and some detailed pictures will help the sale tremendously.

$42k is a fair price.
Still puzzled why any "professional" seller would not use BAT exclusively given the no hassles process ... relatively speaking... and high prices. |

Right on to this one. I completely agree. It could be the difference of $5k to $10K. Who knows.
