Duck tail PLEASE clarify

I know the ducktail was standard on the 73rs, but what about the 74 Carrera's??
Was that on every 74 Carrera as standard, or just an option?? And for 75, first year of whale tail, was that standard, or an option. Read 3 books, and doesn't get addressed properly. Thanks Guys!!

Far as what I have seen, the ducktail was original equipment for US Carreras in '74, not for Germany in '74 (outlawed), ROW was an option, the whale tail was original for USA Carreras as stock, but was an option on ROW. But this is what I know.

I think the ducktail was standard for the first half of the ‘74 production in Europe but I’m not sure. I would be very curious to know what month/year the ducktail was “outlawed”? The whale was even an option for the end of production euro 74’s after they were banned but was not common at all. Yes 75 the whale tail was pretty much the standard everywhere on Carreras but they certainly could be ordered without

Nathan brings up an very interesting question.

At what time exactly were ducktails considered illegal by the TuV in Germany. Was it January 1st, 1974? If so, then he would be right in saying that pretty much the first half of Euro Carreras made for the '74 model year would have them.

Interesting ideas. By now you have to think that Carrera cars have been modded and tails removed, put on, or otherwise forgotten about.

I know that there was a time that a real factory Ducktail was worth more or close to what an entire '74 US Carrera roller was worth. So it's going to take someone with serious knowledge on this to figure it out.

So I bought a 72 and during ppi was told it was a real factory ducktail. (Not original but added many years ago) What’s it worth? Not selling just curious.

And also to note, the ducktail was only on the non-metallic cars, they did not like the way the paint adhered to the fiberglass differently with the metallics or the process of the paint stages on such.

Wow this is interesting. Come to think of it I haven't seen a metallic car with a tail that's original.

minimum $3500, I've paid that twice recently. Seen people ask as much as $6000-8000

I read this somewhere I think. Maybe Snodgrass' book. I do recall an issue with the metallic paints but dont recall if it was specific to the ducktail or whale tail or both. Ill try to look it up if I get a chance

Also, there are 3 types of Ducktail, the standard and the aluminum based early, then the 74, which lost the tag lights. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547500644.jpg
Then of course, the Stratton ducks... Not factory, but don't cost an arm & a leg either:D

My 74, 3/74 build date does not have the tag lights - original duck. #473 Interesting car as it has many 73 parts.

My 75, 3/75 build date #215, original tail but is turbo tail with the " second" opening glassed in.

wayner 01-16-2019 08:43 AM

I think they re introduced it some years later on the 911SCrs as well didnt they?

techweenie 01-16-2019 09:25 AM

There are a handful of ducktails on 74s with little metal blanks filling the license light holes... from the factory.

IROC cars.

Shipped with ducktails, and raced with whaletails. Wonder who has all those ducktails now?

Yeah I have not seen either one personally of those you described. Whats even stranger is the whale tails with tag lights. I'm guessing when Porsche abandoned the duck they still had metal frames left and so they started glassing the whales on them
