Engine values: 3.6s
2 engines:
1989 complete 3.6, not bad, moves freely but needs a rebuild. 1996 complete, Varioram, no ecu, 15,000 miles, looks new. What price range is acceptable? |

Crazy how expensive these have become. I bought my running but tired 3.6 back in 2009 for $3500. A 3.6 needing a rebuild today is $12,000 or so. A good strong 3.6 is $15-18,000 now.

the 1989 needs a rebuild but the 1996 is a low milage ready to run. Why would the 89 be worth that much more over the 96? Because of the ECU and varioram engine?
Just curious. Thanks.

it wouldn't. Perhaps the '89 is $12500 and the '95 is $17500. I didn't get into the details of each just gave a $5000 range to cover most possibilities

'89 in need of a rebuild for $12,500? that seems optimistic. good, running engines can be had for $15-17K, and that '89 is going to need more than $2500-5000 in work...

Thank you all for chiming in.
I want to avoid using eBay listings as references ! |

"most possibilities" I never read that it needed rebuild. The fact is 964 motors fly off the shelves running or not at $12000+

Exactly, I’ve seen tired early 3.6’s changing hands above $12K. There are a lot of folks who plan on a full rebuild to have a fresh, known engine in their cars so a rebuildable engine at $12.5K makes more sense than buying and tearing down a decent one for $17K.

Parts Prices
I think a big impact on the 3.6 values (or any good running air cooled engine for that matter) are that parts prices are getting out of hand now on the air cooled engines.
It’’s easy to rationalize spending $15k on a low mile 3.6 when a proper rebuild with new P&C’s seems to easily run over $10k these days - “might as well get a 3.6...” |

The price is including the full induction system with throttle bodies, ECU, and full M&K exhaust. I forgot to add it will also bolt up to a 915 with the Patrick Motorsports flywheel and throttle cable.
Depending what you value those parts at, the long block is in the range of 12k. ‘Little 3.2s’ have been listed for pretty much the same price with 100k+ miles. There’s a 3.2 at $16k, complete, with 144k miles that will need a rebuild sooner rather than later. I’m open to offers but it’s not easy finding these motors any longer. I think the prices above are pretty good estimates.
89 needing rebuilt $12.5k 96 with only 30k miles probably get you close to 20k if it truly needs nothing. Here is a good condition 3.0L with everything included for $12k: https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/1022962-complete-3-0l-sc-engine.html#post10380969

Interesting from a seller's perspective, but....
What about 3.8 with RS p/c and DC2 cams, overhauled and then crashed the car? Its a low milage motor and 1993 964. What do people do with these motors that are flying off the shelf? I scoured the yahoo japan auction yesterday and couldn't find one.
Though I'd planned to use this one, now over 20 years have changed my engine plan for the 7th time! Would a 3.8 be preferable to a 3.6? Or visa versa? My former plan was to varioram it, with chip and stainless exhaust from Instant G. Took pix of the exhaust just yesterday because that is going as well. bernie
