Ready for some rear boosting, so to speak.

to remain on topic I got $400 in late 2016 per my notes for a BP system that "worked when removed". did I mention packing it for shipping even partially disassembled was a tall field to mow?...

I feel the same way about the turbos. The intercooler kills the way the engine bay looks Sorry Raw

I had the first set-up that you describe and three different mechanics explained that nothing could be done for the horrible flat spot above 4800(approx) minimally without changing cams. Butt dyno it was considerably slower than a stock Carrera 3.0

beauty is you get to 4800 RPM much quicker! the stock Carrera 3.oL had the euro, higher compression pistons though which could explain the better acceleration than a US 3.oL. in my experience the CIS SC US 3.ol does not make a ton more power after 5K RPM as it is flattening out above that mark anyway

Absolutely true. It's way better than it was, but not as good as it can be. Depending on how you go about it, one can get another 40hp out of changing both the cams and pistons on a rebuild. If you toss the emissions and fuel economy constraints out of the way, you can put together a 250hp 3l with no driveability issues all day long. My race customers get another 100hp beyond that out of them! The 3l is amazingly detuned in as delivered form.

Early CIS cams are a little more aggressive too. Webers and SSI on a 74 911S engine can run nose to nose with Webers and SSI on a small port SC engine.

False - it makes the engine bay look like it is housing an engine that actually has enough power to get out of its own way! :)

pmax 04-14-2019 09:07 AM

Yeah, 250hp, of course

but what about butt dyno upgrades even a DIYer caveman can make to the prehistoric systems ?

nathanbs 04-14-2019 09:44 AM

I just put 46 Webers on an 3.0 SC with 9.5:1 pistons and 464/465 web cams, stock distributor with MSD coils and 1 5/8” headers with dansk sport muffler. First jetting was so rich that it was only 145 hp, second attempt after changing mostly everything jet and choke wise was 221hp. Still a bit on the rich side. I know that we should be able to get at least 20 more hp but I didn’t want to spend another week or two ordering parts and re-dyno’ng. Car runs great and I’m selling it so I figure with out knowing what altitude the car will end up I drew the line.

with the hotter cams in my motor I could not get the rich condition dialed out after weeks of swapping jets, ET and AC. the true break thru was when reading paul's site that with the hotter cams a single out muffler would make it tuff. when I scrapped the 2/1 for a 2/2 muffler it made a significant difference. leaned the top end out nicely, yet I remain rich on the idle circuit no matter what I do.

ive learned to live with it and feel im not doing any harm as the plugs look very good when removed for inspection. at freeway cruz im getting mid 12 AF to low 13's and with power applied ive got it to about the same 12-13AF with no limp spots in in transition.

there is a limp spot in the driver's seat, but that's another story entirely...

Lol nice. My muffler is 2/2 so I think just need to tweak it a bit more.

Maybe this will help you out (highly recommended for cavemen carb guys, so I hear!)?!

juanbenae 04-14-2019 11:50 AM

what emulsion tubes are you running?

in addition to the 2/2 helping by referencing this chart I moved to an F8 emulsion tubes that also helped in leaning it out some across both circuits. took my at idle numbers from low 10's, to stuck on 10 because it was richer than the AF meter would read at idle to high 10's, low 11's when at full running temp.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1555271246.jpg

this chart with the info contained in the one above will show the hole diagrams in various ET that I found interesting in better understanding them. in addition to hole location and lay out the center bore diameter and exterior thickness are very influential in mixture.

Juan,

What is your motor and carb setup? I’m sure I hunt through the forum but since you here.....

early, single plug, big port 3.oL, recurved dizzy, 9.5/1 JE pistons with the webcam 120/104 grind, topped with weber 40's. ive jetted it to my sweet spot with 160 mains, 60 idles, F8 ET & 175 air corrections at sea level.

if I had it to build over I might have used a different cam profile that should have influenced a leaner idle circuit. the 120/104 is great from about 3k RPM & up through 6700 RPM (rev limiter set at 7000rpm) with a ton of pull. I had the heads done with stiffer spring and titanium retainers anticipating wanting to get into the higher rev ranges.

in all my research and limited experience carbs are just gunna need to run rich. there is a fine line between lean coughing up through the stacks, flat spots in transition and achieving a good usable power throughout both circuits. I obsessed on it early on, but reading plugs regularly throughout the tuning process and since with them looking good ive grown used to it.

Speaking of which, I hear that Nathan is sporting posterior thickness  , butt don't know if that is true, or just fake news!

juanbenae 04-14-2019 03:02 PM

^^^ raw, love the bold font use, way to drive it home my man!! but, if you use the boldened font too much it loses it's effectiveness... it's akin to writing fragile on every box when you move. what you'll find is no box is then shown any extra care...

I suggest if you MUST multi-bolden points in the same post to capitalizing your main-est point.....

Rawknees'Turbo 04-14-2019 03:43 PM

Good point (not THAT point!) about limited use of bolden text, Tobs, but I am not very familiar with the concept of moderation. Hell, look at where I live; the land of gluttonous excess in all things (food, homes, truck size, hat size, sports stadium size - including middle and high school stadiums, guns, and even fake boobs!). That said, I'll attempt to temper my TexASS sized ways and follow your more rational bolden level of posting.

If I recall, when pNutz got his nads nipped by "his sensei", that dude only use one bolden word to batter pNutz's cheeks (all four of them!) - hmmmmmmm!!!

that was some serious vengeance like whoop a$$ poor silly pnutz endured that time... I felt bad for him even with my under developed caveman ability to feel compassion.:(

id prefer my sensei be mad at me over him being disappointed in me any day. you know ol nutz lost some sleep over tony-boy being so condescending & hurtful to him when he only wants to please... ;)

Agreed about that, but one way that a CIS Turbo sort of makes up for that is when you replace the huge, mailbox air filter housing with a short, cone filter mounted directly on the air metering assembly's intake (the turbo CIS has a suck through air metering arm/housing - not a blow through like the n/a CIS, and does not operate in a vacuum state), and then remove the vacuum limiter (aka- deceleration valve) so that closed throttle response is the same as a n/a car (revs no longer hang and slowly reduce during closed throttle) - this results in a very nice sounding whooosh noise, through the yuuuggggeee air opening for the metering arm/disc, that says, "ballz!!!" (totally different than the sound of BOV venting to atmosphere - hard to describe in text). My father likes to joke that the noise mimics the downward movement of the fuel gauge needle. :)

What image ?

Wait, there is another caveman azz whupping thread besides the aforementioned CIS beatdown ?

Rawknees'Turbo 04-14-2019 10:35 PM

Dayyyyuummmmnnnn, this thread has it all - even Phatt showed up, instigatin' and perpetratin'!

pNutz, the thread Tobs and I referred to was one in 911 tech where a dude was asking about a basic troubleshooting problem with 914 headlights. Toby posted a funny pic/meme making fun of that, and a couple sensitive guys took offence. A moderator then deleted the meme.

Which CIS thread has a beatdown in it? I missed some asshattery and am feeling left out!!!

To be fair a properly modified turbo has amazing sounds of it's own.
The turbo whine combined with the buzz of the flat six that is drastically louder when the twin waste gate open up on boost.
There is no hiding the sound of an engine when that's going on.
And all that is complemented with amazing cackles & pops at shifts and on decel.

To me it's the best sounding car ever. And the daily complements back it up.

Plus if your engine doesn't scorch the paint under your bumper, it should.

Butt what do I know. I'm just a Big Ol Di*k Head :D
