Hagerty vs USAA
Hey All,
I'm guessing this is the right forum for this question. What insurance company should I go with? I currently have USAA and am pleased with their service but concerned on their coverage for my 1982 911SC. I'm covered for "Actual Cash Value" plus 20% but I can't figure out what USAA would consider actual cash value. They say they use Kelley Blue Book and that I can look it up, but KBB only goes back to 1992 online. I have spoken to Hagerty and they seem great and willing to take my money and let me insure the Pcar for whatever value I think it's worth. Hagerty want's more money than USAA but would likely give me the money for the car that I think it's worth if I or someone else did something stupid and totaled it. Some of you are smart. Some of you are funny. Some of you are funny and smart. I'm open to suggestions. And no. I'm not selling the car. :-) John

It’s pretty simple, if it’s not an agreed value, then you won’t be happy with it should you ever need to use it. Actual cash value is a fancy way of saying ‘we’ll determine the value after you file a claim’, which means you’ve got no clue how much your car is ‘actually insured for’ until after you total it. If USAA’s premium is less than the premium on Hagerty’s policy with the agreed value you quoted it at, then it’s safe to assume USAA won’t be paying you that same dollar amount that Hagerty would. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t go with the sure thing, plus, Hagerty is the cream of the crop when it comes to collector car insurance policies.

I am a USAA member and have insurance on my normal cars through them, they're fantastic. They own American Collectors which is who insures classic and vintage cars for Usaa. I have agreed value insurance with them for my cars. Four or five years ago I had a woman roll a stop sign and I t boned her in an 87 targa I owned. They got top top top dollar out of the woman's insurance company and were a pleasure to deal with. Back in 1997 my 94 Speedster was stolen and USAA had a check in my hands a few days after the car was found stripped. The number they gave me was spot on.

Until you have a claim. F. Hagerty.
I’d sell my cars before I’d ever use them again. |

Agreed value is great for a theft or if the car is totaled. Understand that if you're in a fender bender it's a different ball game. You have to ask about mileage and usage restrictions with all of the specialty insurers too.

True, but do you get diminished value coverage with USAA? As we all know, even the most minor of fender benders can diminish the value of a car once it hits (no pun intended) Carfax. I’ve got diminished value coverage on my turbo collection. So it’s likely if I get in a small fender bender with a turbo I’ve got insured well into the six figures, I’ll be getting cut a check for a multiple of the actual repair damage itself.

I have the same deal as Trader - USAA for a grocery getter and a box truck, and American Collectors for the Turbo.

I've been a USAA member since 1967 and all of their services have been outstanding.

I know someone who is very good at what they do to get you what you are owed in the event of a total loss. Go with USAA and have the confidence that you can establish a market value without trouble

Thanks all. Great advice. I will check American Collector and find out if I can live with their driving restrictions, if any.

Depending on how you structure any policy it can have restrictions or not. All of these companies will work with you to make the policy for what you want.
