1978 930 value

Need some help here, looking for pricing advise on this one, I know the market is softening but the time has come to sell this.

1978 930 Euro model current mileage 825xx, actual mileage unknown.

Not a garage queen, very much a driver that can use some TLC.
The story I got from the previous owner was it was originally purchase in Germany and imported to the US in ’84, spending time between Colorado and LA, PO purchased it in early ’91 off Ebay out of LA, 6months latter dropped a tensioner. At some point in time, I am guessing in the ‘80s, the car was disassembled and repainted Guards Red, original color chartreuse, I have seen no evidence of accident / body damage that lead to a repaint, PO story the original owner got tired of the color.
I purchased it 10/91 with 67420 miles non-running due to the collapsed tensioner resulting in bent vales and cracked pistons.
I performed full rebuild which included:
ARP case studs and rod bolts
JE pistons +.5 on compression
Goetz Rings
Re-Nickasiled cylinders
964 Cam grind
Inspected and rebuilt oil pump and intermediate shaft
cleaned oil cooler
Powder coated tin
Complete head rebuild including valves, guides, racing springs
5 angle valve job
New rockers
Kennedy clutch
New K27-2700 Turbo
+ all the standard bits, cam sprockets, bearings, chains and guides, S hose Carrera tensioners etc.

Other bits over time:
New front rotors, bearings and pads
front struts
CVs, and rear hub bearings < 500miles
3 condenser Kuel A/C system, needs to be evacuated and recharged
This is a Euro model that is BAR labeled in California, no thermal reactors, has a 3 way cat of a late ’80s car and has never failed smog inspection, last inspected 3/28/19.

Thanks
Eric

Interior condition? More pics would certainly help.

Your turbo looks nice. The color change, unknown miles, and 82 Euro status are negatives but the mechanical work and Kuehl AC is a plus.

My estimate is around $57k.

You should PM JMS935. He’s the Turbo expert.
I’ll guess he’ll put your car at $40k.

You mention that you have Griffith's a/c components, but then say the system isn't currently working, so in reality, those excellent components mean very little since there is no telling what might be wrong with the system (aka - are there many leaks throughout, is the compressor going to spit its nose seal soon after the clutch engages, etc.). It would really benefit you to vac and charge the system, so that if it works, you can advertise the frosty vent temps and if it needs further repair a prospective buyer will have a better idea what they are in for. I know it would be a big deal to me, and to many others that live in hot climates and actually intend to drive the car on a regular basis, to know the actual status of the system.

I’m far more knowledgeable than you! Asking prices don’t represent market prices, once you finally get that maybe you’ll have a much better handle on what the market truly is.

Service history?

Most '78's had sport seats--do you have the window sticker or COA? Those are $5k to replace, if necessary.

The car came to me with very little service history, PO drove it for less than a year, he bought is as is with no history, I recall receipts for a dash pad, a windshield and a smog inspection. I do almost all my own work so I have receipts for parts and other services I do not do like tire install and alignment. I plan to look into the A/C this weekend.

Out of curiosity, why is being a euro a negative? California registration issues?

It isn’t if you want to keep it stock and have better performance. The US versions were downrated for the EPA, and the California emissions models were even more restrictive. The US versions cost more than the ROW models due to all of the additional work needed to comply for entry into the US, but a higher sticker price doesn’t necessarily make it an all around better car. Many people simply conflate these issues...

Maybe, maybe not !

I was going to ask the same question of the Euro models.

When I got this car it had the original euro exhaust and air injection, no catalytic reactors. A trip to the wonderful Ca smog referee station, they inspected it and told me what i already knew (no cat) amazingly they where receptive to allowing me to put a 3 way cat off a '80s model, never a problem passing smog.

Those seats are later models, they didn't come out until 1985.Just my two cents but something in the $60 area retail.

Mocker 09-15-2019 05:57 AM

^^ Good catch, didn't see the power adjusters at first. Mid-$60s sounds about right with the color change.

Front bumper and valance are from a newer car. The proper headlight washers can be a challenge to find, I think someone in Germany is 3D printing them?

What color is Chartreuse? Can't find it online.

Not sure about bumper, the valence is a later model for sure. The snorkel washers are now being reproduced by Porsche; they're a little hard to find since demand is so strong.

crb07 09-16-2019 07:01 AM

Anyone have a photo of Chartreuse?

Flynt 09-16-2019 07:02 AM

PO should be strung up for color change.

That's all I got.

Could have been Light Green Metallic, like the '78 Sloan had:
