the waiting game.

how low they gonna go?
reasonably decent drivers. not the garage queens.
my guess? down 25% presently. gonna descend another 25% within one
year. a general cooling of the market, in association with surreal
prices for parts, etc.

This will be a slow bleed. Sellers are still convinced it's 2017. Look at all the "I can't believe this didn't make reserve, it's worth at least $10K more" BAT comments.

There's an SC coupe with 200K miles for sale about an hour from me. It's been for sale since March or April (it's been so long I don't remember exactly when). He's dropped the price by $1000 3 times. Still asking about $5K too much and still says "PRICE IS FIRM" in his ad.

For a lot of old timers, they don't have to sell. They bought these for $9K, 20 years ago, so a lot of them will keep it rather than "give them away". But at some point, $20K in hand will start looking more and more inviting vs a car that's never driven sitting in the garage.

Avoid buying any p-car if a few thousand here and there makes a difference in your life now.

Having said that, in the long run, as someone said, we are all dead.

Ha ha no doubt. Maybe a few 10 thousands here and there, however, considering the ridiculous prices associated with engine and gearbox work (or any significant repair, for that matter).

There are plenty of SC targa's in the $20's now. As has been said if you think the car is a buy at $26 but $28 is out of the question then its probably not a good idea to buy at all.

Also agree..... plenty of seller think its 2017 or 2018 still.

I see we've gone from "no way prices are going down, you're crazy!!" to "sure prices are going down but we'll all die some day so who cares". Progress, I suppose.

I'm also impressed that $2K is chump change for everyone here. Do you all light cigars with $100s or just $50s? I agree if you find THE ONE at $28K, don't wait 6 months until it's $25K. But if you're just casually looking, why not wait? It's just about winter too, which means in 2/3 of the country you're not doing much driving for the next 4-6 months anyway.

Missing the point again. Life goes on as you wait "forever" for that "bargain".

If money is a problem, avoid avoid avoid these cars. I can't say that enough times it seems ! If the money is not an issue, makes no sense to wait 6 months, 1 year or who knows how long to get into a hobby.

Of course, I assume you are not in it to make money.

I definitely do not consider $2k to be chump change, but was log rolling () on pNutz's point (not THAT point ) that these are fookin expensive cars to own and operate - super expensive when something significant goes wrong with these relics.

And you're missing the point I made quite clearly. Here, I'll re-write it.

I agree if you find THE ONE at $28K, don't wait 6 months until it's $25K. But if you're just casually looking, why not wait?

I'm not attached to my cars on as much on a personal level as a lot of people. I like driving them. But they're assets, appliances really. Fun appliances, but appliances nonetheless. And like all assets, they lose and gain value. And if I'm looking to buy an asset and there's a strong likelihood that asset will be 20% cheaper in a few months, I'll wait. Be it a car, a house, a stock, a bond, whatever. Few people become (or stay) rich by purposely squandering money. Personally saving $5K 6 months from now, is worth more to me than the temporary high of an impulse buy today. It's not an affordability thing. It's an I don't like losing money thing. YMMV of course.

I also find it interesting that while you can find all sorts of threads here about saving money on DIY repairs, the notion of waiting a few months to save several thousands of dollars is mocked. So spending untold hours to save a couple hundred ...a-ok. But waiting 6 months to save thousands of dollars, mostest worstest things evah!!

Yeah guys, I'm not as rich as most of you.
A few grand here and there adds up and will make a difference.
I didn't acquire what I have by spending frivolously.
Why spend 28 for a car when I *think* I can buy the same car for 25 this winter?
I'll wait.
If I miss out, no big deal

Pmax has said anything that I would say other than the fact I find it laughable that anyone thinks these cars are going down to half price. We will never see $15k SCs commonplace again. That ship has sailed because of the high price of Parts and repairs. The bottom has nothing to do with supply and demand and everything to do with cost of maintenance and ownership.
