Insurance question
Hello all,
I hope this is posted in the right place. I am purchasing a 1988 911 coupe and I am in the process of securing insurance. I have three quotes, one from Hagerty for $1330.00, one from Assurant, an affiliate of Gieco, for $1036.00 and one from Grundy for $460.00. All have about the same deductible, coverage and restrictions. Any thoughts on the Grundy quote? Any input would be appreciated. Marc |

As long as the guaranteed value limits are the same, I feel there is no issue with Grundy. I’m with Hagerty, and for some reason Grundy was more expensive. Is it a $0 deductible policy? Any weird limitations?

Yikes, $1,330 that's out there. Put on some form of deductible, and if not driving daily, add a mile restriction, and the price will drop a lot. Also, Hagerty is very proud. I switched to Leland, much cheaper premium. Attached is from Lelands estimator. Not sure your State and age. But here's what I came up with for Indiana, driver age 55

Contact State Farm and get a quote from them. They offer a classic car policy with agreed coverage etc.

Are you really driving around with a $50,000 property damage limit? Good lord man. There are KIA’s worth more than $50,000! Bump that up to at least $100,000. It will cost you like $20 a year! I carry $250,000 of property damage just in case I hit a P1 or something. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I switched from Grundy to Hagerty. Grundy was inexpensive, but highly restrictive. I basically could only drive to car shows... the online quote on Hagerty was high, called and got a much more reasonable rate (be interesting to know what renewals will cost). Unfortunately cannot get Leland’s in MN. Good to know about State Farm.

Its amazing how many negative reviews I am finding about all these companies. Believe it or not the most negative reviews are about Hagerty. I'm thinking of going with Leland, they were about $800 per year.

I’d stick my cars on a regular policy with Allstate before I used them again. |

Being on the repair side of things it’s really difficult to get mainstream standard insurers like StateFarm and Allstate to recognize that your car is a specialty vehicle. They come in the shop wanting to pay $50/hr to fix it, which is no different than they pay to fix a Toyota Corolla which in either case is not enough money. Hagerty and the other specialty insurers on the other hand are no stranger to paying $125/hr to fix your classic car. That’s just the labor rate, the same goes for the actual procedures required to fix your car

Hagerty is fine. Sometimes you get a crappy adjuster. My friend hit a deer in his 74 Carrera. Hagerty didn’t bat an eye with the estimates. Again, all insurance companies suck. It’s how they stay profitable. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Geico has got to be the worst. Talk to the shops who have had to deal with them. I have Haggerty purchased though State Farm, on my collection. Also have a classic wooden trawler boat insured with them.

Interesting that State Farm gets positive reviews- I have been with them for 40+ years. Recently switched my P cars away from them.
Long story short: reached out to my agent as I had five P cars insured with SF, all expiring different dates. In an effort to consolidate we discuss their collector car coverage. I send in photos ( a couple of my P cars he has insured for 25+ years). calls me and says underwriters will not accept several of the photos because they weren't taken by me. told him, correct, taken by a professional at X, Y . Z PCA events all in the last 2-12 months. I asked him: your telling me you insure my cars for 25+ years, never a claim, not even on my homes that they have covered for 40+ years and SF underwriters will not accept professional photos... Silence on his end!! I would also add SF took two months to review my photos. Crappy way to treat a long term customer. I then ask , If car gets totaled, how does SF cover me? If your car is as insured,.... and IF all equipment is the same... and IF the market is the same, they cover for agreed value, If any of the underwriters want to make an adjustment they can. I questioned how market is established, he tells me SF goes to Hagerty. There is NO AGREED VALUE OR GUARANTEED VALUE with SF regardless of what they call their policies. This was confirmed by my agent after I asked the question at least ten times and he tried to dance around the answer. he finally admitted it. I call Hagerty, No photos required they tell me because its multiple cars and I have had several for a long long time, we establish agreed values for each car- zero push back from them, for a slightly higher premium, in event of total they pay you guaranteed value and you keep the car. Took my credit card over the phone... done. I think my lesson learned, Hagerty specializes in specialty cars. SF is perfect for plain vanilla stuff. Tried Lyland West several years ago, rates slightly more than SF. After two years with them asking for photos every year, photos of storage location, locks etc. Never felt good about their style. To the OP, no insurance co is perfect but you get what you pay for. Hagerty was slightly more than SF, Hagerty understood the value of my cars, understood my passion for them and were exceptionally easier to work with. Will see if I still feel that way should I ever need to make a claim. Last edited by speedster911; 12-29-2019 at 12:26 PM.. |

My problem is Hagerty seems to be twice as much as Leland and almost three time as much as Grundy.
