Value/Cost for 930 heat exchangersTURBO type

I will be needing these in nice condition since the BTR Ruf motor doesn't have them. PO sold off some kind of header/muffler ANDIAL system that was on the motor. What would the outlay be for such in good original condition, what would have been on a Ruf BTR?

I'll need a BTR genuine muffler too, but that is a different issue. Chris has one he's not using, yet I understand his reluctance to sell it. Hard to find another one? I will need one.

So for turbo heat exchangers I would like to get some feedback. I admit my ignorance of all the necessary parts. I will have the turbo, intercooler etc. I'm not sure yet about the waste gate yet. Motor is going under the microscope shortly for work. I've only seen pics of the motor in car from the top, but there are no heat exchangers I'm sure. Ronnie is a Turbo Meister. He might have some input on this.

Thanks a bunch for any feedback,

bernie

I'll bump this puppy just out of concern. When the motor gets shipped back to Japan in crate, I don't want the motor to be rolling around or weight supported on the bottom of the engine case. When it gets here, better it is on a lift table sitting on the heat exchangers. The shop that will overhaul it may have some on the shelf for sale I don't know. What would they be worth in good condition?

Bernz, do you use eBay? If so, do a search while logged in and select, "completed/sold items" and see if there are any recently sold exchangers, to get an idea of what they're worth.

Thank you Ronnie for the advice! I might try that, break up the rust on my ebay thing. I used to sell a bit of JDM stuff on there back in early 2000s, light stuff from here, heavy stuff from there like motors I brought home. then nothing until I busted a move 3-4 years ago and bought a heat exchanger (one) I needed for the 69E I was working on then here in the mountains. Every time I reengage I have to find the password or how to log in. It's just one more example of my decadence.

If I'm not mistaken the BTR exhaust was nothing more than a Stock Porsche exhaust system(Euro?), the muffler was a stock muffler with two extra pipes coming out of the passenger side. You're better off with a Rarely l8 exhaust header system and then using a RUF muffler if you find one.

Bernz, somehow I missed the part in your original post asking for help with identifying Turbo specific exhaust parts.

The easiest thing for you to do is look at the Porsche Classic Parts Catalog and then compare that with what you have (then ask about anything you need help clarifying).

Here is the catalog for 911 and Turbo for model years 1987-1989. I chose that one as all of the headers/heat exchanges installed on these cars were the better "Euro" variety, beginning in 1987. Obviously you may not need specific, emissions related parts.

Look first at page 165+ . . . most of the exhaust related Turbo components are there. Note item number 1, (what has been nicknamed the "J pipe) - that is something you didn't list above, so will need to source one of those if you don't have it and intend to use the OEM headers setup.

Ask about anything you see there that you aren't familiar with, bro.

file:///C:/Users/Owner/Downloads/911,%201987%20-%201989.pdf

I don't know why that didn't past as a link, but you can copy and paste that into your browser and get to the page(s), I think.

Thanks Rey and Ronnie! I've got some homework to do with what you've sent over. This corona virus scare is getting close to home here so we're gonna go stock up on food tomorrow early in the morning. One school I work at just cancelled two ceremonies i.e new entry Ss and also graduation ceremony for Ss graduating. That's the biggest educational institution in Japan private or public. I'm not so worried about it but my Mrs. is, so we gotta go shopping and stock up on essentials. Thank you guys! I'll try and study a bit on what I may need.

Heat exchangers on that Ruf certainly look like factory 1978-up RoW. These even look very similar to stock 3.2, but not sure if they're the same (eg exhaust port size). If they were, you'd still need the J pipe. And the Ruf wastegate arrangement looks unique to me. Looks like they muffle it and run it back to the left rear corner.

There's some discussion on the Flacbau thread about the Ruf vs the 930S muffler (which both had dual tip both sides, but slightly different tips.

If Ruf don't have the correct muffler, then you're either out of luck - or very lucky to find one, if you do. The muffler on that Ruf looks like the RoW factory (Bischoff? both of mine were) muffler, but with an extra pair of factory tips added.

CarGraphic were mentioned in that thread as having tips that looked very close, but with a different muffler. However, some of their current offering pictures look very similar to a factory muffler, with different tips:

https://www.cargraphicts.com/en/products/exhaust-systems/for-porsche/911-models/930/

eg the Sport model:

The factory mufflers eventually rust through - but the tips are usually fine, so you might be able to start with that and add two sets of tips, or just finish them like the factory did...

I have a set of RoW turbo heat exchangers hanging on the wall of my garage.. The muffler is a single outlet so not sure that's what you're looking for seeing dual outlet ones above. No clue on values but saw this and willing to part with them to help out your endeavors on a RUF! Shoot me a pm if you're interested.

Thank you spuggy and JacobS911 for the great information! I'm learning on account of your help. I'll keep studying so as not to make many mistakes. I have to be careful not to get my wagon in front of my horse! First thing I have to do is pay for the rebuild, but the damage is still an unknown. Once the engine is stripped down it might be clearer on incoming invoice. Until that is taken care of, no options for me to pursue needed parts. I am looking forward though so as to anticipate what's necessary and what it might cost. I'll keep everything you've said in mind, study and keep trying to raise the dosh! Today I cleaned up and put my 964 RS alloy bonnet up for sale domestically.

Thanks so much for the help!

bernie

Curious to know what an original BTR muffler is worth, anyone have an idea? (I know where one is but not likely to be for sale as owner is a hoarder, want to make a fair offer)
I have a straight pipe out the side of my BTR clone. Sounds great but would like to have a Ruf muffler. Was thinking about adding a second set of tips to a stock muffler but this option in today’s would would not be cheap.

I thought you had it yourself Chris but couldn't use it due to the clearance on the turbo you're using. Maybe that is the same Ruf muffler you mentioned? I would be interested in it it time, after I get the engine all home and done.

My original muffler was Ruf stamped, and I got rid of it 15 plus years ago and it was corroded. I should have kept the parts, but at the time I was thinking sell off Ruf parts cause I didn't think I'd be going back Ruf with no engine I got rid of at the time etc. going back 20 years. Sold off the intercooler too.

The weird part is that my muffler tips came straight out the back, not corners, since the body was 964 Turbo look. My rear bumper has those ports, and it's painted like the bonnet above. If I were to get your muffler, I'd have to modify the outlets, or get a different rear bumper. It's all so complex. I don't think I'll ever find one like what I had, at least a used one. To re- engineer one would work but then not original and not Ruf stamped. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.. Ugh!

exhaust for your Ruf

The heat exchangers you want to run come off the 3.2.Inside diameter is 3 mm larger so it starts boosting sooner and they look stock.Light machining to exhaust port to fit the tube in.Also aids in making exhaust gasket more blowproof.I did a lot of customer 930,s with these and they are not expensive.Ciao Fred
