Couple of weeks back Yama****a san who lives a stones throw below us wanted to borrow my chainsaw because they had a bigger oak tree they couldn't cut with their smaller ones. As an outsider for 7 years here I've tried to fit in. It takes time, yet it's part of what I mentioned above. I never try to take anything from these people. Live to give, and they be a watching too! One wouldn't be able to pull the wool over their eyes, nor would I want to. After 30 years in this country I'm still a guest. If they accept me as their own, I will be home indeed.

Or, the looking glass self concept, in Sociology i.e we see ourselves the way the most important people in our lives see us. Forgot who discovered that one. If Jesus loves you just the way you are sugarwood, and he were the most important person in your life, wouldn't the world turn? I couldn't proselytize y'all except to go Turbo like Ronnie and 911 (not like Adam). I don't go to church, I'm not religious. I do have a Bible in my car that I never read NIV. Got a BA degree in Biblical studies. It's like you said Nick, degrees mean little, experience is the best teacher, yours having owned a business with people to look after. Mine, just a journey I've been on since leaving my country, and before. It goes on ... still enjoying it and may never come home I fear.

Double downing on wrong and inflammatory things, I think this dunce has a future in American politics.

I'll ask again, have you done anything to help our your fellow man in this time of crisis, or in my case done that and encouraged others to do the same, which many have because of my call to arms.

And to answer your second question if I would do a selfless act without any hope of recognition. Since you asked, 6 years ago I started going to my daughter's kindergarten class to do art day, 4-5 times a year, I've done it every year since and with my son when he started school. So that's 6 years of doing my own art program for hundreds of kids. I purchase all the art supplies myself and have even made machines to do it like a spin art machine. Do I get recognition, nope, I can't even take pics of me with the kids because of privacy. The only tiny bit of recognition is a few teachers call me Craft Dad when they see me in the halls, but that's about it. Oh, and don't forget, I work for myself so a whole day I spend at the school is a day I don't make any money, so it's a real sacrifice, not just a housewife re-arranging a tennis lesson. I hope this answers your question about my character which you so thoughtlessly questioned in a bizarre hope to get attention. Seriously, take your frustration and go help you fellow man, the world will be a better place.

I appreciate when companies show acts of citizenship. It’s part of how I decided to spend my money with them. In addition to the automotive ones I’ve shared here, I’ve shared companies like REI (who is paying every employee while they are closed), Columbia Sportswear (whose CEO is not paying himself his $1M+ salary so it can go to their employees) and La Sportiva Footwear (who are using their factories to make PPE for Italians free of charge).

Actually, Bernie my man, I'm a little jealous. My opinion of this metro NY scene, and it some ways the entire country, has changed dramatically since we began traveling in earnest since 2007. Then again, living in Canada part time for 25 summers has done it as well.

The pure ignorance of the world of so many Americans, because they have never left this country for any reason whatsoever, is astounding. And I'm just a neophyte when it comes to travel when compared to my oldest son's experience, being in the Navy on Active duty, reserves thereafter and working for a company where he has to travel extensively. He can tell some stories, let me tell you.

We considered Italy, Greece, Portugal, France and Ireland for our winters instead of Florida, but decided it was too difficult picking a spot every year, moving stuff etc. America is great, but not everything people think it is.

As I've said, Japan is on my list. Not my wife's however. She has a very restrictive diet.

Sounds like you have a good life going there Bern. I've heard nothing but good things about Japan. Enjoy!

My wife is gluten, dairy, and soy free because she has Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disease. Japan is her number 1 travel goal and she won’t let it stop her.

It’s not just that most Americans never leave America. Most Americans never visit more than 3 states their wholes lives. Kind of explains just how divided we have become as a nation. Someone in the Midwest or south really has no actual understanding of a Coastal person and vice versa, beyond what they see on their TV. We could use more of the good old fashioned road trip in this country.
