How do the Brokers/flippers find the cars?

Not looking to get in the game, just curious.

Some seem to always have the same generations. Some come up with some really nice examples, some not so much (insert BHCC)

In real estate we can prospect for a specific property using public tax records, but are the flippers accessing the dmv for owner's contact info or?

About 5% of the cars I buy are advertised, the rest is word of mouth. People just know to call me, I'm fair when I buy and I won't blab about their collection. Privacy is very important to most collectors. They don't want a bunch of people coming to their place, eye-balling all the cars, they want to deal with a known Porsche dude with a good reputation.

Chasing classifieds ads is a fool's errand, I know guys who do this, it's very frustrating and they are generally starving for cars.

I've found some great cars at decent prices at P-shops. The cars are never advertised, usually need work or have a few issues. Two come to mind I should've purchased.

A 912 that had had a 911 engine in it. Decent shape, no rust, faded paint, great engine. Think they wanted $18K. Passed. Argh.

A 993 that was a salvage title. Had hit the curb hard and broke the axle, scratched the right side pretty good. All fixed and looked great, drove great. I knew the mechanic who did the repair. Low miles, $20K. That would've been a long term hold. Argh.

There was also an SC with a 3.6. Car was an absolute monster. Shoulda bought that one also.

You don't find them on the internet. You have to get off your butt and talk to people.

They find them like the rest of us, except it’s a full time job, not just something you do on the side. They also have cash ready to go. That gives them leverage for fast sales at lower cost.

I got lucky on a 930 last year ... the seller kept saying it was in perfect condition blah blah but I knew it needed a lot of work but he just wouldn't go down.
I waited for over 7 months .. kept emailing, kept calling, kept stalking him, asking if he wanted to go down. He didnt.

After a while I just called him out of the blue and said listen; I am about to buy another 930 tomorrow (bluf) but I want yours. We both know it's been sitting for over 4 years (according to Carfax) so it needs a full rebuild BUT I am willing to pick up tomorrow all cash, no PPI no questions.
I told him my offer stands for 24 hours.

He called me back an hour later and accepted the offer.

I got a pretty sweet deal but I had to be very very very patience!!

I ask complete strangers and RV customers and anyone that won’t punch me in the face. I bought a ‘79 930 off a guy sitting next to me on a plane. I bought a sweet ‘79 SC from a friend of a guy I asked at a party and never did meet him but got a great car. Both times the prices where very low also. To get those 2 successes I had to fail about 1000 times with other people I asked. It’s fun though.
Here’s what you say : “ Psst, psst, hey buddy..., ya you. You got any old 911’s , ya old 911 Porsche’s ? “ it’s pretty funny 😄 I

They call you since you conveniently forget to mention that you also carpet bomb people's physical mailbox by mailing spam like a pestering telemarketer.
Where do you buy your mailing lists ?

Ha I might have to use this tactic! I'm sure that when it hits you have some great conversations.

Where do you buy your mailing lists ?
The mailings are really only about 5% of what I do, the rest you'll have to figure out, but I doubt you will. Just know that most of my leads come from other Porsche guys recommending me, ask yourself why that is?

I can guarantee you that nothing in your limited brain could fill trucks and shop lots full of Porsches. But I can send you a poster so you can have inspiration, just send me your address, is there a separate address for your mom's basement, like an apartment?

As for the mailing lists, I can honestly say I've never had to buy one.

I will give you one hint on how to do what I do, it isn't any one thing, it's a hundred things, but how to know those things? Well, it takes years of practice, a good work ethic, and a degree in marketing helps too.

---Adam
