Trade a 993 for 991

Is it a crazy idea that I could put up my 993 to trade for a 991 / any balances taken care of with cash of course.

I want to sell it and then buy a 991, but seems like a lot of time and hassle. Am I crazy to think someone would take the trade? I also don't know how this transaction would go down legally with taxes and such.

Has anyone traded a car on here before?

There was a time when some dealers were desperate for air cooled anything. What condition is your 993, what body style, and where are you thinking of trading it, dealer or privately ?

What gen body style and features on the 991 do you want ?

Legally I think every state has different laws but here you would have to pay the tax on the declared value.

I tried to do a vehicle trade about 1 year ago the deal breaker was that the other party was not willing to pay the taxes on the deal, which is mandatory when registering the vehicle in Canada, so this killed the deal for us. I did hear of a way that you may be able to avoid tax if you do the deal thru a dealership somehow, that is a dealer that is willing to do you a favor. Good luck!

Foam insulation full body wrap at speed with the windows up, stereo blasting and perfect HVAC conditioned air. Just push your right foot down, steer and go fast.

Gee, what's not to like about that?

I traded my 70T with sports seats for a 996 convertible, and I paid him 10k. That seems kind of silly today.
The transaction was across country.
It worked out good.

If you want to change vehicles, you should always sell vs trade. With a trade you are limiting the available pool of your next vehicle to the select few who want to trade. You should have no problem selling a 993. Then you can focus on buying the best 991 that your money can buy.

Can you give us details on your 993 and what sort of 991 you're looking for?

All 911 models are different and great. I think of the older being more sports and the newer as being more performance with the the 993 or the 996 as the tangent point.

The 991s are amazing cars. A significant difference you’ll notice is depreciation as opposed to appreciation.

OP I'm curious what happened with this ? Did you make the trade and what kind of offers did you get for the 993 ?
Be a good market indicator if you would be willing to share ? Like DoninDen said the 991 is an amazing car, and with the offer of teh last of the air cooled as a trade I'd like to know what they offered. A dealer near me who dealt in high end Porsches for the last 3 years has now quite quickly completely divested himself of all his Porsche stock.

^ Same story for a local dealer here. He was up to a dozen 993s including the owners personal low mileage 993 TT. All have been sold off. The market flattened out and shows no sign of gaining strength again so the dealer moves on to other vehicles.

Hey guys, Thanks for the tips.

I haven't gone to the dealer, but after reading the posts, i'll probably just try to sell it unless someone has a 991 that they are looking to trade.

Since everyone was asking this is the car. its a 1996 911 carrera, black on black with sport seats inside. 74k miles. Im not sure whats its worth. I would guess 70k but don't know.

I dont think you're getting anything in the $70's for a base 96 C2 Coupe with 74k miles on it. My guess is your 993 is worth somewhere in the $50's.

^^ Agree with Trader, I’ve got a ‘95 993 and so I’m a little familiar- $70s is a stretch. If it’s a Tip that will bring the price down a little as well.

This is an old thread but perhaps someone will run across, considering trading my 991.2 for a 993...am I crazy ? 2018 GTS Targa4 for a 993 C2. PDK for manual. Point and shoot video game for an actual sports car ? The 991 is unengaging to drive, has limits I'll never be able to exploit (other then when I took delivery in Stuttgart), but it is beauty. Wholesale value on GTS is $125K (CDN). Dealer selling 97' 993 c2 for $129K. Very low mileage and beautiful condition, but am I going to be disappointed with 993 ownership for this kind of investment ? Give me your .02

Are you going to be comfortable driving your investment? A very low mileage car often doesn’t make a good driver for fear of depreciation. Personally I’d be look for a 997 GT3 at your budget.

That's $129CAD for the 993 C2 and $125CAD for the 991? That's one VERY expensive 993 at $90K US.

Etonia; dig deep and ask whether you have "Covid-induced-shut-in-Porsche A.D.D." or you are genuinely smitten with the '993 look and feel (beautiful looking cars for sure!). Ideally, have both at the same time and you can make your own informed decision on a matter that's entirely personal preference. More practically, drive some 993s and see if the car speaks to you. I went from a 930 to a 997 GT3 and back to a 930 in 5 years and couldn't be happier with the 'regression'. Those who prefer new don't get it, shake their head, and think it was a stupid move. I don't. Aside from the tax advantage of the trade, $129K is serious coin for a C2 993. P. Dealers in Canada have a few of these old air cooled cars and are asking insane money. You will pay big time for the convenience of the trade. Make the decision that works for you.
