Is this BAT crazy or am I out of touch?
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1986-porsche-911-carrera-44/?fbclid=IwAR1gUQA3x2fn9dQt5Pyz2Qnuk0gSx5osHZuojacJ InR8u5vFM3KMi9f6CYc
I thought this car, while very clean and nice, got a big BAT bump selling much higher than I would expect. Am I crazy or what. I've kinda watched SC since I bought mine and they seem to have fallen a lot... Seems like maybe the 3.2's are doing well *shrug* |

BAT crazy.
I have the exact same car sans the rust bubbles and don't get it either. |

I was a bit surprised given I could not get $50,000 for mine.

I continue to be regularly baffled by the high bids on BAT, this one being no exception.
Yes, it's a cool color combo and has sport seats but I don't see it as having anywhere near the "collector" value that the winning bid (+fee) indicates. It's a repaint - and likely has some rust lurking - as well as looking less than pristine in a few areas (interior carpet, water-stained headliner), and has a number of unoriginal components to boot, even if the BBS wheels do look badass. When I was shopping for a SC/3.2 back in 2018 to mid '19, I twice went after cars almost identical to this one - '86's in Meteor Grey / black interior. The first (with comfort seats, decent condition and 85k miles) was listed for $42K and sold in one day while I took a minute to sleep on it. My loss. The second was offered at $49,5, had 95k miles and was completely original and in nearly perfect condition. The seller and I couldn't find middle ground on the price and I moved on. Point is, I just don't get the BAT buyer mentality acting like these are a vanishing commodity. Why not go to a cars 'n coffee or a PCA event and chat some people up? These cars are out there for reasonable prices, waiting to be found. But I guess there's a premium BAT buyers are willing to pay for the "here and now" aspect. To each their own.

Yes, you are out of touch.
This was all predicted repeatedly on this forum. BAT prices should be hitting new highs with a massive influx of quarantined used car demand now concentrating online. People are bored at home and want to spend money. I know someone who just sold a car and motorcycle at full asking price. Prices are going UP. Why are BAT prices higher than ads for sale pinned on the corkboard the corner grocery store ? Auction effect is real. BAT is nothing new, the concept was common in the 1700s. If you're willing to pay $x, you're also willing to pay $x+1. Basic. Anyone expecting to find a bargain at an auction doesn't know what the word means. There are people gladly willing to pay a 20% premium for delivery. Amazon knows this and has taken over the planet. Not complicated. Add in a quarantine, and expect BAT prices to spike 50%. Also, wealthy people value time over money. Contrast this to deal seekers who take 2 years to find a car, and those who search for a decade. The wealthy click a button and get things rolling fast. BAT is for the wealthy. Guys who want a bargain do not shop online, and only buy cars on CL. Over half of all employed Americans (51 percent) transitioned to working from home. They have not spent money on anything in two months. No travel, clothes, entertainment, gyms, vacations. Nothing. Their net worth is higher than ever after two months of dramatically lower spending. Stock market is only 13% off the high, but personal cash stock piles are up. Each month of quarantine increases cash hoards that translate to buying power. Of course, the laid off bartender will not be buying a $50,000....$51,000.....$52,000 Porsche, but that was never the target demographic. Buy now or forever be priced out! They aren't making any more! Almost every major discretionary spending categories has been eliminated during the quarantine, and will not fully recover until a vaccine is released: Major home improvement projects, new car purchase, vacations, childcare, dining out, new clothing, sports and entertainment, wedding costs, commuting, beauty hair and spa treatments, gym memberships, drinks at bars, daily Starbucks, etc. Conclusion: 79% of people don't feel their job is in jeopardy, and now have an extra $10k-$20k in unspent cash compared to 2 months ago. If Boomer's kids skip college, that's another $250,000 that can go towards the dream 911. By end of summer, G50 prices will hit 6 figures. Buy now or forever be priced out.

Wow, very nice car, very clean, much cleaner than mine, but its still a boring NA 911, my 911 turbo hotrod failed to sell for $34,500. Thinking about trying again soon on Pcar Market.

I don't think it is just BAT, the overall air cooled market has gotten crazy. Check out this FB ad: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/453160982246290/
I sadly believe these cars have become a commodity and too many speculators now look at these treasures no differently than AMZN or BRK.A stock. "too much cheap money sloshing around the world" - Lou Mannheim |

Sugar, my friend, the joy was in the journey... It certainly wasn't a waste to spend a few hours a week over the course of 18 months meeting interesting people at car events and networking to find a good car.
And yes, when I need a refill order of bubble bath for my daughter, I go to Amazon. Done. But the process of searching for the 3.2 (and then a second) was almost as fun as the ownership experience has been. Certainly it's fine by me if there are people out there who want to bypass the pursuit part of the journey and get instant gratification... As I said, to each his own.

I agree that this was a surprising outcome even for BaT. Paint bubbles, respray (or was it just refinishing?), twisted dials, aftermarket steering wheel (and muffler from memory), BBS rims are not the kinds of things that generally resonate on BaT. I had this one pinned in the 40s. Value generally all over the place in all risk assets though. That’s amplified on BAT bc the market is more illiquid, less informed and auction dynamics do cause people to spend their last dollar + 1 or 2 more.
Out of interest, what do you think the median BAT premium is for a like for like car? I’d have put it at 10-15%. |

That's a nutty price for a car that's lived its whole life in snow country.

Sometimes the prices boggle on BAT. I bought a car there last year, a 911T that I paid up for, but in the scheme of things, it was a good buy as it didn't need much and anyone who's owned drives and works on long hoods knows the rat holes those can bring.
Makes me wish I sold my very clean, very original 89 Carrera on BAT last year! But, it went to a good home, a great owner, and I know where it's at should I "need" it back! |

No listed on Pelican.....
How do you think BAT would value the upgrades on my 86 Carrera; the turbo brakes, LSD Transmission, 7&8" wheels, recovered leather sport seats with hounds-tooth inserts, working AC ($$$$$) and other minor Hot Rod modifications? or will they see a scratch on the rear fender and a blemish on the carfax? My car's next owner needs to understand what they are buying ... a car that can be used..... BaT loves low miles and originality.....
