So since the green mohr car was rnm at 66.5 does that change anyone’s thinking that this is a 90k car?

Why did a 5 year old engine need a rebuild?

So, I looked through the old receipts.

And, here is the answer:

Chain Ramps broken/ 4/5/6 side of engine damaged.

On the positive side, it allowed my brother to afford to purchase a damaged 911.
And, if he hadn't purchased it, then it wouldn't be here for your viewing pleasure.

That dash looks awfully shiny. I hope you didn't armor-all it.

I use Griot's Garage products.
I find they do what they are intended for, without damage to the car.

For the entire vinyl portions of the interior I wore nitrile gloves, and using my hands, rubbed Leather Rejuvenator into the surfaces.

It restores some moisture to the old vinyl/leather (steering wheel), eventually soaks in and leaves a light sheen- while protecting the vinyl from deterioration/shrinking & cracking.

I don't leave the 911 sitting outside, so UV rays don't damage anything.

Thank you (all) for the supportive comments.

Gonna take some pics of the front trunk in a little while & post those.

Have a better understanding now, of how an archeologist must feel when entering an unexplored ancient, sacred tomb.

How common was this?
If I bought a new car, and the engine crapped out in 5 years, I would be livid.
I certainly would never buy another car from that trash quality brand again.

Because everything was super reliable in 1973?

Yes, ramp failures are one of the myriad issues 911 engines have had over the years.

Just drained the remnants of the 21 year old Castrol 20W/50 that remained in the bottom of the sump.
It probably has about 2000 miles of driving on it.
About a pint came out.
This is what it looks like.

And, this is the analysis results from the oil test lab:

What do you guys think about the appearance of the oil?

I am not as worried as I thought I should be.
There are pin tip size specs of gold/copper in the old oil.

Plans are:
Drain the old gas with the vacuum pump,
squirt a shot of Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder (reinstall the plugs),
pour 12 quarts of new Castrol 20W/50 in the oil filler neck,
hook up a new battery,
pour a gallon of fresh premium gasoline in the tank,
spray a burst of starting fluid into the airbox intake snout,
pull up on the choke lever,
turn the key
and
hope it purrs to life.

I don't have the battery or oil yet, so probably next week.
If it starts, I will shoot a video/audio & link to it here.

Thank for all your contributions to this thread. It has kept it interesting, challenging & informative. Back to work now.

sugarwood,

The engineers of this 1973 'T' engine designed it to be redlined at 6250 rpm's.
The manufacturer was not at fault.

The owner of the car made a serious mistake in exceeding that limit.

He paid dearly for it.

In fact, he lost the car.

Removed the carpet & the spare, then wiped the inside of the trunk with a damp cotton towel.

Got to thinking: "Nobody ever shows the inside of the trunk in detail. It's kind of cool in there."

Read that the placement of the spare tire was also a safety feature, you can see that in these last photos.

Trunk has that hump to hold the spare wheel firmly in place. Coker has new Michelin XWX tires for $312. + shipping. This spare is like new, but 38 years old (rubber is hardened).

Carpet set is 3 pieces, 2 on each side. All pieces snap into position. The two lift shocks need to replaced. Ouch.

Comprehensive tool roll.

8 & 9 MM open-end Wrench,
10 & 11 MM,
12 & 13 MM,
14 & 15 MM,
19 & 22 MM box wrench,
19 MM lug wrench;

and, this I just figured out (better late than never):

the 10 MM Allen Key/wrench fits into the end of the cylindrical spark plug puller/wrench.
Of course, everybody knows that, right?

Don't lose that screwdriver, it's worth $200+, no joke. The 19x22 is pricey, too.

I look forward to hearing it start/run. And I hope you change your mind about selling and just keep it after you get it running. This car gets better with every picture. The details are incredible; nicely preserved.

At this point, with all of your photos and updates, I'm also hoping you can find a way to keep it.

No! If you are going to sell this car don’t mess with the originality. That tire is date stamped. Leave it. Leave it all!!!

If you decide to keep it and want to drive it, buy 5 used Fuchs and mount whatever you want. But for god’s sake don’t throw away that old rubber.

You can devalue this car and hurt your sale if you try too hard to make it nicer and destroy the patina.
