A Honda SI wit a 6 speed is a fine commuter car. It actually doesn't take much effort to make an aircooled 911 better in every metric except creature comfort. It just takes money.

Here in the San Diego area very nice examples of the 996 are $18-20 grand all the time. Deal of deals. Honda SI is amazing, 85 air cooled feels like a tank. I love it, but I know what it is and what it can do. I don’t think of it as a performance car, I think
of it as a really cool vintage sports car. Kind of like why people own a Austin Healey 100-4. Or a triumph TR – 6 . The cool vintage factor. A 2018 mustang GT has 460 horsepower. V6 has 300. Think about that

I understand why you feel the way you do. But you are wrong about the performance envelope. A new mustang weighs as much as my pickup truck. It's incorrect to lump old 911s in with those antique cars you mentioned.

Check out the results from two weeks ago at my local autocross. How close was the nearest Civic SI to my daily driver 87 911?

Final Results

A honda SI is okay, there's nothing wrong with it. This is probably not going to be the most receptive place for your interpretation. Especially since you're wrong.

Had a 99-996 Cab. Decent low mileage car, a lot roomier, easier to get in and out of than my current 951. Miss my 911 Targa though. Build quality much better than the 996 or 951. Trying to sell the Turbo to get a later model Cayman or Boxster S with PDK. Getting tired of shifting and making repairs on older models.

I was going to make a less scathing comment about this the other day. A Civic will whoops an SC or 3.2s arse at the stoplight in town. But get on the rolling hills and curves outside city limits and it will struggle to keep up. Horsepower doesn’t win races so much as chassis. I always surprised a few people at the open track day Fridays when I used to show up with my 86 Carrera. Getting a waveby from the tuned WRXs and A4s is always fun.

A mustang GT will go from 0-60 in 4 seconds or less. With 460 horsepower no matter how heavy it is. My 85 Carrera does it in about 6.1. There is no way we can catch up with the mustang. Or a Tesla model 3 for that matter. Holy smokes they are fast!!! Duel motor in about 3.3. That is super car speeds. Like a new 911S.

Ford Raptor is pretty quick too but it doesn't feel like a sports car.

Who cares about 0-60 anymore? Seriously. It proves nothing other than you can push your right foot to the floor. Same thing with top speed.

I stopped caring in 1971. Dumb, macho BS IMO.

Try a Cayenne TurboS.. once you try that car/truck it is very Awsome in everyway.
Bang comers faster then most 911 i've had and the 0-60 is stupid crazy to.... tires/295 all 4 comers then it can do 100mph on a dirt road with a hot coffee in your hands...
smokes every hotrod cool car i ever raced too.. hellcats mustangs amgs

I have had a long hood, a 964 and now my 996. I can daily the 996 and it’s a better performer at the track as well. Bland, I don’t think so.

the 996 has to be the best bang for the buck.
lots to choose from - be super selective ....... and aware of the potential ims issues.
