Sub $20k Purchase Options
Am I getting weird or is the 996 starting to grow better looking with age? In a world of hard lines I'm really entertaining the idea of picking one of these up all of a sudden... Anything else beat it sub $20k?

I've always liked the looks, it's the interior design, bland driving feel, and IMS bearing that put me off.

I actually like the 996 interior as well. Just the cheap materials and IMS that put me off.
I recently picked up one of these instead, low teens with a fresh engine and suspension. ![]()

996 is the modern midyear. Maligned and bland, but coming into their own as they age.
If there was no IMS fears, these wouldn't be SUB 20k. That said, the 996C4S is my favorite of the M96 motor cars..

Damn that 951 is nice!
My folks have owned an 01 996 cab for 17 yrs. It has been very reliable. Still on the original IMS bearing. The Champion wheels and the side skirts That were added back in 06 took the car to the next level looks-wise. I tried to talk my dad out of these mods way back then but I sure was wrong. I also really pushed for them to get a much less expensive 993 instead of a 996 but in the end, I think the 996 is a more reliable car so they made a good choice. I went out and bought a 993 for myself. Perfect south Florida car. ![]()

![]() They’ve grown on me too. 20 years ago I thought they were fugly. 10 years ago I started working with a lot of 996 Cups. With the fried eggs gone they aren’t so offensive. Spend a bit more than $20K and you can get into a 40th with X51 engine, LSD,M030 suspension, leather interior with hardbacks, and be driving a baby GT3. 80% of the car for half the money.

I’ve owned a 996 for almost twenty years and it’s been a great car. Modified the suspension, 19” wheels and a gt3 body kit. Looks awesome, very far from bland handling. Best car I’ve ever owned.
Did the ims when I replaced the clutch and water pump at 60k. Has 120 on it now. Will never sell it. It is left to my son in my will or if I become unable to drive it. I love 944’s also but it isn’t a 911 I wouldn’t hesitate Tony |

I guess folks do not know that the 996 has better braking, steering, way better shifting , 0-60, top speed and better handling than our old air cooled cars. So bland driving? I don’t think so.

That's said, I've never minded the 996.

My son’s Honda SI with a 6 speed is anything but boring. Very quick shifting and real fun to drive. My 911 is fun but feels like a 67 bug compared.

The 996 is aging extremely well, mine gets tons of attention in Biarritz White over Natural Brown.
I've been around the 924/944/948 cars for 20 years. They are fun but definitely feel several decades behind the 996 in terms of refinement. My good friend has a low mileage 987 Cayman, it's a wonderful car attainable sub 20k but would not trade my 996 for one. Lacks that 911 mystique. Owned a 986 Boxster for seven years, fun car that I miss, but again wouldn't give up my 996 for one. When I first got into Porsche's in the early 2000's, the SC wasn't even "approved" by purists at the time. Look how that evaporated like a morning haze. The 996 will be no different. There's already a feeding frenzy on BAT for nice examples. Anyone who has driven one and isn't in complete denial will realize. I think the factory aerokit cars will be especially collectible someday. Buy 2 at current prices ![]() |

My car runs and drives fine. I love it. But it cannot compare with a Honda SI with a six speed. Many of us have our old air cooled cars because they drive, feel , smell different and are cool modern classics. Our cars will never be rockets. Unless you got da turbo!!!!!!

Right at $20k. I don't know much about these. Seems like a awesome car for $20k.
