A month of Porsche numbers

I love September because everyday is a new Porsche designation to a design.Grady and I laughed about this. You have 901.902.904.905 which is sportomatic.906 DUH.907.908.909.910.911 HOORAY.912.914.915.916.917.918.All the days in this month are special to me.I sent Mbruns a post about his struts at 9:14.Well it is official.I am nuts.Ciao Pelicaners.Fred

The 915 box

Oh yes,the venerable 915.I am with you with your rating of it.I just bought an 83 cab with trans but no motor.I have a rebuilt 911/01 trans from a 71 with LSD I am putting in.Bought a Stromski shifter which is a very nice piece. For a road car the Dog Leg is for me.Trans has reinforced side cover and unless you are into holeshots they hold up very well.Easy swap.On the hunt for a longer tunnel rod.Fred

The 911/914 mag case boxes are the best of the pre-50 boxes. I love driving the dogleg not because that first gear shift is somehow cool, but because the 2-3 shift is on the sane axis. It’s just more functional day to day. It’s how every gearbox should be laid out.

And it does feel and shift way lighter than the 915. The gears are only a couple mm thinner but it makes a difference in everything. I might have an old 822 gear around here somewhere. They are through drilled for lightnes and were used in all the early prototype race cars until the 917 came a long.

822 GEAR from MR.Monson

Hi,what gear is that 822.I did a lot of 904,906,907,910 gearboxes and I never saw one.Are they drilled like the 917 5th gear I sent you? Please post a picture.I had the gearbox apart on the 013 Michael Green 911R and there were no drilled gears.I had some gear sets water drilled for my CP 914-6 shifting seemed more crisp with less mass.Fred

I thought I still had a couple but I was mistaken. There was never an 822 gearbox to my knowledge, but the part numbers used that prefix. I found it really odd because Porsche always uses 9s. They were drilled like that 917 gear, but even bigger holes. PowerhausII copies the design back in the 90s with their Light Years Ahead gears.

As for what car? I’m not sure. 906 or 907 I believe. 1965 or so

get drilled

Thanks Matt. That is cool.I always learn something here.It could be there were some drilled gears and I did not notice. We would leave the gearbox in and just pull the cluster and the whole gear change was less than an hour. That is why I liked my SCCA CP 914-6.Today is Rawknees favorite number as he loves and raves about the humble 912.Fred

I just wrote that down thanks!. Never learned it at school so it's been a bi-ch ever since trying to figure when my next work day is. I know Feb has 28, but I will remember the rhyme once I internalize it 9/11 was a nightmare 20 years ago, only heaven before or since in my world.

Hold your left and right hands in front of you with your thumbs tucked under and your knuckles touching. Leftmost knuckle on your left hand (pinky finger) is Jan with 31 days, then the recess between it and your next knuckle (ring finger) is Feb (special case is 28 most years), then continue on with knuckles and recesses. All knuckles are 31 days, recesses are 30 except for Feb. Your two touching knuckles are Jul and Aug.

Today is 9/28, the model that first got me hooked on Porsche from the movie Risky Business. Ironically I’ve never owned one, though, they’ve all been 930s.
