textbook example of "The cheapest Porsche you buy will be the most expensive Porsche

https://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/1974-porsche-911-coupe-c-11743.htm

If this car runs and drives, I love this car as a ratty rat rod driver

But, at $25k, that car is nearly a textbook example of "The cheapest Porsche you buy will be the most expensive Porsche you buy"
I would love to know the story of this car.

Look at that mileage, LOL
Fender flares are cracking off
Undercarriage has rotted through, and has even been patched, several times.
Interior is trashed.
Rust on the odometer
I've never seen a passenger seat that trashed.
No wipers

Yes, look at that mileage. It’s a 5 digit odometers. Could be 108k or 208k or 508k...

Sugar baby
I been to Beverly Hills Auto, in fact sold him a 1971 911T, not located in Beverly Hills just a name.
It’s worth a visit he has many different cars besides Porsche. But no bargains, and his term mechanically sound is a reach. The main issues is RUST, RUST, RUST. This car like many can have weak unibody rust, mostly hidden to the novice buyer. Cars like this become a slippery slope of money eaters.

It was a listing similar to this that began my Porsche journey. Fortunately, I had become good friends with a guy who has been involved with the cars for 30 years. Wish I could find some of the listings I sent him, you guys would fall out of your chair laughing. But that’s how I learned about the cars. I’d find a listing and he’d go over all the reasons why I could do better, often accompanied with a comparable listing that was 10k more up front than my listing but often 30-40k cheaper than the reality of my listing.

That is the exact reason I start threads like this, for newcomers.
Great way to learn some basics of car buying do's and dont's.

Ask Dwelle and Matt M about rust free 74’s. Dang near no such thing.
Mine was an AZ car and I’m still scared to tear into it.

the floor pan sections that have been done actually make me feel bad for the person who had a vision and obviously not enough talent or dough to make that thing into their dream porsche

Man so typical and so much damn work and parts. Unless its already been done I just factor it will need to be done on every pre 76 car.

The other thing I did was when I was ready to pull the trigger was to involve my local air cooled shop. Since they were going to be doing the repairs and maintenance, I wanted them in the buying loop. My friend introduced me and it’s been a great experience. I honestly feel that without them I’d be a disgruntled ex Porsche owner.

famous last words. mine looked similar. when i opened it up, there were places wher the undercoating was in tact but there was literally no metal left.

it’s really not a bad job, just labor intensive...

I had many rusted cars and still do.

But if you move up a few years the SC, Carrera are much better, but beware of rust around windows, bottom of headlights, door jams, and still battery areas. Batteries have improved and do not seem to expel as much acid flumes, but these cars are now over 30 years old.

That is great that you had a friendly local shop to guide you through.
I had my 911 PPI'ed by an awesome and very friendly Euro shop, a nice honest guy with whom I still keep in touch with.
I also have friends who purchased cars through a Porsche indy which turned out to be negative experience.
It's truly a mixed bag, so count your blessings, and send that shop a nice bottle of wine for the holidays!

The path to the holy grail that is Porsche ownership is a lot like the final scene of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Snakes, flying blades, ghouls and perilous pitfalls await. Without your cunning to protect you, you’re relying on a healthy dose of good luck. Quite often, you need both. Get through that however, and eternal life awaits ...

PS. Sugarwood, not ignoring your PM and one day soon, I will write about my experience of buying well only to have a mechanic snatch disaster from the jaws of victory. For now, however, I am focusing on the good vibes. My donkey just carried me and my wife across the country for our one year wedding anniversary and it was blissful. My bruises will heal sooner that I forget those memories ...

Well, they DID go to the trouble of "patching?" a hole on the underbelly using some of that high quality 3M blue painter's tape!

Glenfield, glad you had a great road trip with the wife. Awesome to hear you logging some miles. Now that the car is back, maybe you can get excited about building up the tool set. Do you still have the big list we made for you?

Yep, have the list and purchased a good starter tool kit from HF. As you know, the Porsche gods had different plans for me and never got to get stuck into it.

Will wait until 2021. Cars out in Cali now hibernating bc I thought better of driving it back the wrong way from the West Coast. Truthfully, time apart from the car will be good for me and great for me and the wife.

But we digress. Onwards and upwards on spreading these cautionary tales for newcomers. Can say that now that I’ve got the scars to prove it ...
