New scam while trying to buy a 964
So I’ve been in the market trying to buy a 964 driver condition coupe for a while now, almost got scammed on auto trader a few days ago by a guy posting pics of someone else’s car, even had a pic of the title , now the ad disappeared and scammer scattered, when confronted he wouldn’t send any actual real time pics of the car.
Buyer beware, many shady folks out there trying to take advantage of the market . I guess the search for a 964 continues |

Get use to 964 prices, we all know this, to even think there is a manual coupe out there ...that thousand of trolls are trying to buy is unreal today. A friend from NY is pondering weather to spend $85,000 for a low mileage 964 or 993.

The $67k and $68k is about right
Maybe the black ones be is a better buy on BaT but pay $3500 Closing costs |
far from a new scam. not just with cars but dam near 90% of the stuff on craigslist. i was looking for a quad a year and half ago and the number of bogus adds was unbelievable. one of the dead giveaways was the contact phone number or email superimposed into the photo. i think that enabled them to share as little with CL regarding contact info as possible. there were other tells, but that one seemed most prevalent.

No question CL is awful and so it eBay anymore
Lastly a live auction is not good either unless you can see the car. A friend bought a 2007 Carrera S and is very disappointed in the purchase |

amazing how craigslist has died out in the past year or two, here locally it's the same few dealers spamming ads, many not even local anymore, most of the real private sellers have migrated to facebook marketplace. |
Not really a new scam. I have had people come look at cars I was selling, take their own photos and ask to see the title. Then snap a pic of the title and make a low ball offer. Then three days later I see their photos up and anyone who contacted them would be sent a pic of the title too.

i don't think i would allow a perspective buyer to take a photo of the title until the check cleared. what was the reason they gave for wanting that photo? seems like a very odd request as long as the seller would show them the title during the viewing. |
I was sloppy and he snapped a pic while I wasn't really paying attention. When I questioned him he pretnded to delete it in front of me and apologized. It was on me. The thing sounded fishy from the get go.

so he was a scum from jump across the board...

What are you looking for? Budget?

I've seen the scam many times on Craigslist. Usually the ad is rather short, just some bullet points about a car and a nice photo. Velocity Porsches is the actual real and legitimate dealer, but these scammers copy photos from that site or from their ads on the Samba and then use them in their own phony Craigslist ad. I've 'busted' several of these guys now... as soon as you call it out they disappear.

Toby, as I've said before, you have what it takes to be a top moderator! Why not if the calling is there. Can moderators make money, make a living at it or is that just volunteer work? Either way, you could make short work of pmax and sweet stump both in a NY minute. Answer the call...

At $72k all in you would be hard pressed to find a lower mile later 92- car that doesn't exceed 6 figures if all clean and original. There are a lot of things I can point out about that car. I believe I knew the car back when it was in NJ and I don't want to say what I know if it isn't the same car. If it is the car I knew there is a car fax issue as the incident never went through insurance. The white car actually doesn't look bad. The smile doesn't bother me, easy enough to fix. There is something that doesn't add up to me about that one either. It too is an early car this one with high miles and no mention of any engine work which by now most 90's need. There are not enough pictures to say one way or another but worth looking into if you like white and cashmere. The price is fair and if no issues show up in a PPI worth considering. |

my pelican act over the last 19 years probably would prevent me from a mod position here. since losing interest in 911's and shifting to the "jeep life" i rarely visit anywhere here but the MPF to see what the regulars are up too. i imagine that my participation will decrease further after my car is shipped out in the next few weeks. i never have been banned in all the time here, although ive gotten more than one warning over the years. old seanie-max and sweetest stump can't claim that!;) |
Is Sugar on timeout again? I haven't seen his rubbish for a few days.

No they can't! Just another feather in your cap (hat)Toby, If you diminish here, you'll be missed, some lonelier I would think me included. Some guys like Ronnie seem to have become addicted to that scarf and barf forum PARF. Good on them. At least they've found a higher meaning and are having fun. As long as you are still around, and a few others, I won't get lonely. Always newer guys coming in too like Reno775 who are pretty cool. Just don't leave me here all alone with M2! Just kidding!
