Question Experience with Dick Barbour Performance

Hello all,

I'm considering buying a car remotely from Dick Barbour and wanted to know if anyone has experience with this company. They are located in Georgia and seem to focus on Porsche's. If you have any experience with them, please let me know.

I’ve never dealt with him directly but his sales guy used to post here regularly. More than a couple of their cars have been picked apart in threads in Marketplace. I advise you get an independent ppi or fly in and inspect the car yourself.

Hearsay from guys I know down there is about the same as the prior post.
Boils down to - ignore the name, it’s a used car dealer, get a PPI.

I have no personal experience - repeating word of mouth comments - so take the value of my commentary as what it cost you.

A local wheeler dealer around here told me once about them "be careful". I have no personal experience with them.

Last year I flew down to look at a car they had advertised. Wasn’t a bad car, but it also wasn’t in quite the condition the ad described and the documentation they said was there wasn’t. Still was interesting to me so I suggested that based on what I saw I thought it was worth about 10% less then they were asking. They balked, I said if they reconsider the price give me a call and I headed home. Car sat for another month and then I saw they dropped the price to right around what I suggested, no call. Whatever, I moved on.

Bottom line - it’s a dealer and they generally know no more about a car than you would by looking at it. Fly in and see it for yourself so you know what you’re getting

Let us know how it goes. They do find some nice cars too. Hopefully this is one of them.

We had a customer buy a silver 1980 SC coupe from them. I urged him to get a PPI. He felt that their reputation precluded a PPI.
When the car arrived, (Nov 2019) it literally did NOT have a muffler. It had a tailpipe fabbed on to the catalyst. (It was "race car loud"- LeMans heritage?)
Most of the shifter bushings had failed. Both cam tower oil lines were leaking heavily. The turn signal/ high beam switch had failed.
The tires were FIFTEEN (15) YEARS OLD. The vehicle had been lifted improperly, repeatedly.
All 4 corners of the floor pan had to be beaten back down with a dead-blow hammer. One of the oil cooler lines at the right rocker was 50% crushed.
On top of all this, the body and paint were very poor. Both rear quarters and door lock posts had been very poorly replaced (Mig wire and Bondo hanging our all over the back side of both door lock posts). The RF bumper shock support area was fabbed out of random (too heavy) sheet steel.
The silver paint had very low gloss, helping to hide the body issues.
I believe that the sale price was approx. $35k. Caveat Emptor.

I have met and conducted business with Dick and his son Ales - they have been doing this since 2013. They are a retailer, not a service center and encourage people to get a ppi and do a full survey prior to buying. That is what I did and it went well.

Ive done business with them several times without any issue . Problem is most buyers dont understand that they are buying a 40 or 50 year old car . If you dont know what your looking at its likely going to be a bad experience regardless of who you buy from . Yes old cars need work .

I have done business with them. Either go look at the car yourself or have a PPI. It's the same for all car transactions.
