Track Ownership History or Title
I’m outside the US but a regular user of PP for sourcing parts and tech advice .. great community!!
I’ve been restoring a 1972 911 which is finally nearing completion .. it was originally a US car, at one time registered in PA. It was imported into Australia about 2009. I need evidence of previous registration in order to be able to start the registration process here .. frankly I have no idea where to start .. hoping someone on here can point me in the right direction … how do I go about this ..?? Anyone in PCA PA perhaps able to help out a fellow enthusiast?? Endless appreciation and accolades for anyone who can get this on track … ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

What paperwork do you have for the car? There is no way it could have been exported out of the US without a valid title, US Customs tends to be very strict on that.

That’s really good to know. I know it was exported without an engine .. Does that mean is was exported as parts and therefore could be exported without title..??

Aussies have been known to import a car without an engine. Especially when the car exceeds the luxury car price limit on import tax. I don't know what you have or who you got it from. I can say I've seen it done from the US to AUS. I didn't export the car from the US to AUS. I merely sold the car, and then it was picked up by a third party. It was dismantled and brought in separately. It did have a solid title however, so that was never an issue.

You could try getting a carfax report from the VIN number.
https://www.carfax.com/vehicle-history-reports/ That might give you some idea of dealership that the car has been through. If you are lucky and it’s been sold at a dealers, they may still have some documentation for it (if you are really lucky). It will also tell you if it’s been paid out as a stolen car and you have yourself a very nice track car. Failing that, as Dan says, try calling Pennsylvania DMV and try the old ‘prior user lost the logbook but gave you a bill of sale’. You have since moved and want to get a logbook. It might help if you have the history from the carfax to back up your claims and that bill of sale you have from when you bought it and imported it.

You haven't replied much here on your own thread. Your handle reads NZ. I'm assuming you're a Kiwi and living in AUS. I know lots of Kiwis and Aussies in the business. If you need any more advice let me know if I can help.
You can PM me if necessary. I'm here to help.

Catching up with the replies .. thanks all. I did get a reply to my email enquiry to PENNDOT .. apparently no records for cars 10 years out of reg or more. So I’ve concluded the best route is to go ‘Alternative Documentation’ which is an option here in NZ. But I think they want to see an honest attempt at tracing title before they’re happy to issue it. I think I’ve probably got enough to put together my case for this route .. thanks all who contributed ..
