New To Me 1976 912E

Hey everyone,

Another day, another adventure.

I bought this car almost 2 months ago and it finally got delivered to me from North Cali area.
It was purchased as a small project by someone for his 75 yr old mom and never got around to getting finished.

It's a 1976 912E
- sunroof car
- special order color
- fresh repaint ... 15 years ago
- needs lots of TLC

Ideally, it's a really cool car that I can always take around town and not have to worry about blowing it up. I miss my 68' 912 so maybe this can fill in.

My wife and I are still bidding on homes when they pop up so if we win something soon, plans can change quick.

Any who, I hope you guys enjoy the video below and photos to come.

Have a great weekend.

Great cars. I used to have one. The gearing is identical to the 1973 Carrera RS but it's got a 914 engine. They make great Subaru swaps, even if you just put in a 165hp EJ251.

Yup, put the original motor on the shelf and run a 911 or Subi in her...

I had a buddy with a real speedster that ran a vw motor in it while the original motor sat on a shelf. That VW motor was hot, way more powerful, thus faster, than the orig motor!

That being stated, originality and numbers matching trumps all....

I watched most of his videos, good stuff.

I’ll look more into it this weekend after getting the car home.

Man, times have changed. Most Porsche guys wouldn't be caught dead in this car back in the day.

Same with mid years! They were the Porsche trash of their time. Then the 996! All making a comeback!! I loved the 912e in 76 and I love it today.

Interestingly, Europeans have always liked the 912e, which they never got. The small displacement and fuel economy have tax and cost benefits. Mine went over there after I sold it.

The more I look at the car and what it needs, the more I wanna get it done! Planning to buy both glass seals this week and plan a day to pull the motor.

Lol true, every air cooled car has it's time to shine sooner or later. Look at the prices of the early 912's .. shot up like crazy.

Thanks Matt!

I sent the videos to the previous owner and he showed them to his 90+ yr old mom. He texted me again saying he really enjoyed seeing it cleaned up and in good hands.

I thought about finishing the car and maybe sending it back to Cali, meeting up the previous owner and letting him take his mom for a spin.

There would definitely be some logistics involved but I know enough truck drivers that I can possibly make it happen! We shall see..
