Buyer Beware: 1978 930 Turbo "Targa" on eBay
Claiming this to be an original car is downright criminal in my opinion. With the current bid at $89,100 - someone is in for a hell of a surprise. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thoughts? |

Ok, I believe there was 78 turbo; could this be a real one off?

Did anybody read the ad or look at the pictures? Featured in Excellence with an article? Written documentation from Porsche? The car definitely deserves a long look, IMO. Might not be a fake after all.

Yeah, car has been at my shop many times over the years. The seller reached out to me about it weeks ago. There are quite a lot of docs that go along with it. It was always a car that needed some work, looks as if it has not gotten much of it yet but could be good for a Targa fan.

Jeez. And reserve still not met. I’m thinking he’s fishing with a super high reserve.

Notice he didn’t post any scans of the alleged documentation/communication from Porsche. |

One, I can't picture Porsche letting it go to just "anyone ", it would have been Brumos (like when they got the original 911Speedster ![]() And it came with strings, plus they had to be willing to let Porsche have it back. And that is what happened to it. It was a wedding gift to Peter W. Schutz"s daughter. Last I heard, she had gotten divorced and the ex ended up with the speedster and was going to sell it. ) So the idea that just any dealer without special ties to Porsche ended up with a one off turbo doesn't make a lot of sense. Kind of like this Jag I saw over the weekend. ![]() ![]() ![]() Again, false claims backed up by a printer. One more quick note on the Speedster, I drooled over that car several times . |

The speedster is probably the biggest head-turner of all time. |

At nearly 50 years old, anything really could be changed. That turbo badge doesn’t look original.
On the front fenders, let’s not forget those were welded on flares. In 78 they weren’t stamped as turbo flares yet.

If this car is legit it’s more of a choice for a high-end auction house rather than eBay. Think about it - this would make worldwide news. 2 hour TV show, Netflix special, etc. 😀😀. But hey, what do I know.
He probably put a $10M reserve on it. Didn’t sell. |

That is a bait fish looking for a big dumb whale.
A car as unique as that would be well documented by people as pedantic as Karl Ludvigsen. More simply, however, is the chassis vin context is completely bogus; that just is not how the factory put the car together. Factory correct vin context in a '78 Targa ![]()

A while back, a turbo targa Holbert built for a customer was for sale. Here is a link to the ad:
http://davidsclassiccars.com/porsche/45466-78-930-turbo-targa-alan-holbert-editon.html In the ad write up for the Hobert built turbo targa (built on a 911 chassis), it mentions Porsche's interest. As a result, according to the ad, Porsche ended buildling 2 turbo tagas in 1978. The ad also notes these 2 Porsche built turbo tarags were in an Excellence (#50 December 1994) artcle. I'm not saying this is or is not one of the 2, but sharing the information.

I don’t think anyone is doubting that such a car exists, just that this is not it. That VIN is clearly bull*****

Clearly that wing and hokey wheels were not available in 78, plus it states that it was built with B&B headers, but B&B wasn't in business until 1986. ![]() |
