Value of R134 system?

Hey yall.

I am completely deleting the R134 AC system from my '82 SC. Will be upgrading to the Classic Retrofit version.

I have zero idea what it's worth so idk what to accept.
Installed in '01. So it is old but it did work when I got her running last year.

What should I realistically accept?

Honestly, most of it's not worth much. Modern condensers and hoses (not to mention rotary compressors) are far superior to 1982 technology. There's a market for the fan assembly, and maybe the expansion valve/evaporator. Of course, if somebody is doing a concours restoration on an 82 SC, they may want your old stuff, but it better be in perfect condition.

It's a modern system.
The 80s systems used r12. Industry standard changed to R134 in '95.
This is a R134 system. It was installed in 2001.

Classic Retrofit has had trouble in very hot and humid climates like in Atlanta and Florida.

It may be better to just change to a Kuehl/Griffiths system. You already have the lines, it would just be a matter of installing condensers. I have the Griffiths system in a 930 here in Atlanta and it works well.

I also have a Classic Retrofit system slated for install in a high butterfly MFI car where I don't want for the compressor to be in the engine compartment for vanity reasons. If you read the thread in the Porsche 911 thread, you'll see folks that have had to tweak their CR systems a lot and are still not entirely cool.

The guy reporting the issues on that page is (at the time of thst comment) running a single condenser. Classic Reteofits sttae that say advise 2 condensors in hit and humid climates.

I'll have to look into those brands but I already pulled my R134 system.
It's not going back in now. Lol.

I've spoken with Targa80 at length - he was running two condensers, insulated the blower unit, and still had trouble cooling the car after those posts. This is after tinting it as well.

Part of the problem is that the electric condenser consumes so much electricity that it gets cycled off and also that the blower did not produce enough air - now there's a new blower design that will hopefully improve things.

I have no skin in the game, I just haven't seen anyone in the hot and humid climates get a great result with the CR system. Hopefully yours will work well - but it would be one of the first.

I do appreciate your time. And I hadn't really dug into the system so I don't know how high it's success rate is. Which, in turn, makes this the 1st bad review I've heard/read.

I hadn't purchased it yet so I may look at the option you suggested.
I'd just hate to have to reinstall everything I just took out. Lol.

Madness, if you want an AC system that will stack up with any modern car's capabilities, go to the Griffiths site linked above and look at the design of their condensers and evaporator. With no frontal area (to speak of) on our cars, you need efficient condensers--and lots of 'em. I have four on my 930 (front, half-bay on the engine lid, and two [fore and aft] in the right rear wheelwell). I can drive anywhere in the summertime in complete comfort.

Thanks for yall input. Guess I'll look more into reviews of each. However, with yalls testimonies, the Griffith system does sound superior.

from what ive gathered by reading this thread if it was the original SC system there could be a market for the concourse, originality crowd, but something installed in 01 would have little value. it works so good you want to get rid of it? just hope it all fits in your garbage can, and you don't get tagged for tossing any hazmat stuff....

I originally decided to change to the CR kit because its lighter and takes less power from when its on.
I know this kit is likely only worth anything to folks wanting to stay more original.

Does your 134 system include a Sanden compressor and all the lines ( I expect original condensors) ? I've still got the original R12 system with the York boat anchor compressor.
