Found a 1983 911 SC

Hi,

First time buying an Air cooled Porsche.
Can someone tell me if 1983 911 SC any good?
Engine work was done 2 years back..a lot of other stuff too. Planning to drive it cross country. Can I do it?

Thanks

Thats a risky comparison. I would expect Porsche not to talk back to me and argue.

Don’t mind Suga. He’s rude a lot.

An SC is one of the most bulletproof and reliable of the air cooled cars. It’s all about the condition of the specific one you are considering.

You’ve found a great car, ‘83 SCs are wonderful cars. You should give it thorough looking over before your cross country trip, like any old car.

Check over in the 911 Tech section and do a search on cross country journeys. You should have a great trip home.

Thanks.
The cylinder heads were done, brakes replaced and a lot of other work total 14k.
Of course everything looks good on paper. I have not yet seen or rode the car.. I am going to look at it on Monday. It’s 2000 miles from WNY. I am not sure if I can drive back home. Not smart thing to do.
I plan to drive like 700 miles every day. But as you said I will look into that thread and see if anyone did it.
Can you tell me what to look at for these cars before I buy? Like rust, engine sound, oil leaks etc.

Yeah he has a reckless attitude to make fun of others on a genuine question.
Thanks for the information though.

i would book a round trip flight, just in case. better to lose an airline ticket cost than feeling obligated to take a car that may not check all the boxes cause you need a ride home.

do you have any photos? is it a targa or coupe? you don't mention a price....

getting an unfamiliar, 40 y/o car for a long road trip is not something i would do, but that's me....

You will learn more about the car by having a long talk with the owner and seeing what kind of person they are. If they're kind, honest, have plenty of money, all their stuff is tidy and they like to treat people and things with respect, you can probably trust the car.

It’s from a dealer. Car looks inside out clean. No rips no tear no rust etc. But I’m yet to see the car in person and feel it drive.
But you are correct.. I am buying this from a Porsche dealer. I don’t trust dealers but he selling Porsche car in a Porsche dealer. However he said car is sold as is.. that’s why I am bit hesitant.

Where is the car? I suggest that you post over on the 911 technical forum and see if a knowledgeable pelican local to that area go with you to check out the car

Pony up another $1500 bucks and have it shipped. Sort the car after you get it home.

1500 is not a big deal, I want to drive the car and shipping might take at least a week to get to Buffalo NY. Here it is already getting cold...

For that kind of money you should be able to find a nice 911SC that is local to you and proximity will enable you to perform adequate due diligence. You sound as if you have a somewhat limited knowledge of these cars so you need to proceed with caution and seek out the right reputable knowledgable owner/seller whom you are able to trust. The 'right' 911SC is an excellent reliable 911, but one that is not the "right" one can be costly.... never mind chancing a drive of that distance.

Another option would be to contact a localish experienced shop owner who is aware of what customer cars maybe on the market, like Mark , mepstein here on this site, and have a member connected to the Porsche community find you the "right" 911

Headstuds? Exactly.........on a 911SC one always needs to verify intact or replaced with documentation or a visual. Or, to be safe, factor cost of replacement / upgrade into purchase price...
