1971 Factory S car - Frankenstein modification- Value?

SOLD

I have a factory 1971 911S car. There were only 1430 S coupes made in 1971. This one has sportomatic trans not sure if it was original sportomatic but I believe so.

In original shape early S cars are of course very sought after.....sadly this one was modified probably in the 80s. It has a fiberglass wide body with some sort of homemade Japanese "Midnight Racing" type front end with fiberglass front fenders too, It now has a 2.7 CIS engine, BBS era rims , Recaro LSC seats ....It also has some rust on front suspension pan that needs to be replaced, so it is definitely a project.

I just picked this up, but I don't know best route with this car???? I realize that it is a factory early car, and has an S VIN. The car is already modified but I think it has more potential for someone else than me. I am debating to sell it. Maybe someone with better skills would want to restore an S car back to what it should be? Or it would also be an amazing start for a real longhood outlaw type car? Or should I part it out by selling engine separate from the shell? a 2.7 CIS engine does not belong in this car. and I already have a 77 with 2.7 CIS. So keep this engine as a spare? I just got this car; I am in Canada. My plan is to sit on it until spring then clean it up and see what I actually have. The engine turns over by hand never tried starting it. The sportomatic was apparently rebuilt Joe Cogs in Georgia and the car has never been used since. Joe does say he remembers the previous owner but his shop did not keep records either? But I am aware that without receipts and build sheets a "rebuild" means nothing really.

Looking for some friendly advice, or what a reasonable price would be to sell. I have been a member of this site or over 23 years. I AM NOT INTERESTED IN HEARING ABOUT WHAT A SHAME THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID TO A GREAT CAR...OR HOW MUCH YOU MAY HATE THE MODIFICATIONS ETC. OR WHY WOULD YOU BUY THIS?? THIS IS THE CAR, IT IS WHAT IT IS NOW. I am just looking for true opinions on values. MY thought process is to either use the money from this sale to get my 77 back on the road, because it has been off way too long. Or to just get this car running and have fun. I also realize that a 71 S car is a "better" car than my '77. But, I have had the 77 for over 25 years and too many important memories so it is worth more to me than this one.

Thanks guys

I wouldn't assume that this car is "better" than your '77. The things that make it valuable (the engine [in particular], and short-hood/narrow fenders) are gone and will be expensive to put back to original. Yes, it could be a $125,000 car some day, but how much time and money will it take to get there?

If you can do the work yourself, you've got a fighting chance at making it work. The more you have to outsource...well, you know.

Mocker I agree the car would need a lot of work and never be a $125000 car. I realize the 2.7 74-77 are often considered a poor era. I just happen to love mine

Macroni . Thank you and for that price I would part it out, or just get it running and let my kids run it for fun.

Thanks both of you

In recent years, the mid year cars have come into their own. Nothing wrong with a 77 911. I suggest you stay the course.

I think Mac’s price a bit low. You can get more than $5,000 for just the engine. Those wheels have gained popularity recently as well. There’s easily $15-20k value in that car all day.

What does the interior look like? Is it still early S on the insides?

I'm not buying but I think a finished, freshly restored 71S in mint condition is a $180,000 car. The 2.2S is the best of all the 911 engines. The sporto takes the shine off it a bit, but I'd put a 5 speed 902 box in.

To get it to original, paying somebody to do everything, I'd guess you need $30k engine and ancillaries, $45k body & paint, $15k interior, $5k gearbox, some extra bits and bobs, say $100k total. Build in $30k profit for yourself leaves a £50k car.

You'd probably get $10k back on bits you removed.

Why 902? That’s not the right gearbox.

I thought the motor alone would be worth that.

More Friendly advice......
I would strip to Tub saving all 1971 parts sell off all other parts

This would be a big project to bring back.....
Here is an idea of what a period correct motor would cost.... $14,000 w/ needs.

A non-running 2.7 is probably $3,500-5,000.

OP - without the original engine case and transmission this thing is only worth the value of the collection of parts. If you can get it running my guess is you could sell it for $30-40k as it sits.

This will let you know what the wheels alone could be worth.

fwiw, i recently sold a set of 9 & 11 x 15 BBS RS's in good shape for $3K. it was an easy sale, so i took it, but probably could have gotten at least another $1K if i wanted to market and be patient...

With the market falling and the cost of restoration increasing, you could easily be $30k in the hole when all is said and done.

that car is not restored back to a 2.2 S for 100k, not happening. at a reputable shop you can probably double it, insane amount of hours and you will be left with a non-matching 2.2S -

Mepstein got it right except I think you might be 100k in the hole.

just forget about it. 5-10k and move it on,

No 1970-71 2.2S cars were fitted with Sportomatics from the factory; only 2.2T and E cars could be ordered with them. The 905 series Sportomatic boxes were not up to handling the horsepower and torque of the 2.2S motor. A beefier Sportomatic, the 925, was available for the 2.4 cars, including 2.4S, for 1972-73.
