Has Gulf Blue changed?

This high-priced 912 looks like a Minerva blue repaint, or is it me? https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/1149635-original-gulf-blue-66-912-a.html

6603, usually spelled Golf blue here in the states, is a very different hue than the gulf blue racing livery we are used to, as seen on later cars.

that being said, that ad sure likes like gemini blue, at least it shows as a metallic variant, nothing like the Golf or gulf blue that I'm familiar with

i didn't look it up, but i assumed that car was golf blue...

Gulf Blue is Gulf Blue, sort of an iconic hue...hard if not impossible miscall... When I saw the posting I first thought the poster was not knowledgable and got the color of the car all wrong..but that is such a big miss I then thought that the poster must have meant that Gulf Blue was the original color and the car has been repainted..... I wasn't aware what specific years Gulf Blue was/was not offered...

Has Gulf Blue changed?

Looking at my book. It’s either pastel blue or metallic blue. Which were special order colors for 66. Going off the paint squares my guess is metallic blue.
Gulf blue was a standard color.

There's an "early" Gulf Blue and a later Gulf Blue. Different colors.

Go by paint codes, not the name.

Gulf Blue was a dark Blue until John Horseman, technical director of FAV and then of JWE asked Grady Davis (Gulf oil), if he could have the cars a lighter blue so they were easier to see and a blue he liked personally more. I think this was about 1967. This is the light blue that everyone now thinks of as "Gulf Blue"
John Horseman is most known for cutting the back of the 917 long tail off and creating the 917K and a the 917 a winning car.

What book is that an excerpt from? I don't think I've seen that one.

Thanks

My car in the 2nd post. Here's another shot of it in my new garage under fluorescent lighting. Looks different in different lighting obviously... the car is about half original paint. I always think of it as "golf" blue as that's what it is in the old price lists that I have from my dad (he was an independent importer at that time).

Brian Long. It was a Christmas Gift several years ago. It’s supposed to be very accurate on the history and changes throughout the years. I’ll have to take their word for it. LOL
