2006 Carrera S with bad engine value?

An associate of my brother called me last night, describing a catastrophic engine failure. He was given a $30k minimum estimate at dealership. I looked last night for an engine replacement and they are scarce and expensive. He’s older, like me, and really just wants to move on. He inquired if I might be interested in the car. 88000 miles one owner, enthusiast owned. 6 speed, black on black.
Thanks for taking a look everyone. Much appreciated. Happy Holidays.

Thanks, for responding. I have been looking this morning, there are a bunch of rough engines out there for $12 to 15K. Nothing I would consider installing. Renegade hybrids?

It might be useful to find out the exact nature of the failure. A dealer is going to quote a crate replacement engine. The original might actually be rebuildable.

At that mileage I’m guessing the car is worth more like $12-15k.

Thanks Matt, I think hes done with it. I just sold my Boxster S and my SC and the idea of a new project at this time doesnt have the allure it once did. I may help him list it here and other places,if he asks for my help.

Other than LN, who rebuilds these? Located in Louisville, KY. Ill try to find out what they found in the oil pan.

Try Tony Proasi at Stuttgart. If he doesn’t do then he will know who does.

LN is just the best known. Charles Novarro (of LN) and Tony Callas fly around the country for Worldpac training people to service these engines.

Flat six innovations rebuilds them, cost used to be slightly less than a stock crate replacement. Uses LN products, maybe that's who LN uses for their rebuilds.

I had a customer with a 2005 Carrera S with a failed engine 2 years ago. The shop he had been using had told him "997's don't have the IMS issue". The IMS failed at speed and damaged the case.
The M96 3.8 only came in Carrera 4 and Carrera S, so that limits the pool of potential donors.
This car was OK, but not super nice, so the cost of repair would easily exceed the value of the repaired vehicle. I spent a fair amount of time/effort looking for a practical solution, but never was able to come up with one. Just my 2 cents.

Carerra S (997) it's a 3.8 L motor...my 2cents...Interested to see where this will end up, is it 6 speed?
I'm sure someone will grab this.
Happy New Year!

He’d have to rewire the car to accept it. Gen 1 and Gen 2 stuff don’t play nicely.

Nope. 2009 is the first year of .2. They are DFI, and won’t even bolt to the previous gearboxes.
