Tire recommendations?

I need to change out my old tires, which aren’t made anymore, so I need to find another tire option. What is recommended for tires in a 315/35/17 and 235/45/17? There aren’t a lot of options.

I think the only options are Toyo Proxes R888r, Extensa HP ll, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and the Nittos. I was leaning towards the R888r because I have those on another 930 as well, but maybe the Nitto is the better option for wet pavement. I’m replacing the Dunlop SP 8000.

I've got the Nittos on my 79 930. I did have 245/40/17s on the front but they rubbed on the louvered oil cooler guard in the RF fender, so I went one size down to the 235's.

Just wanted to add: I'm not a fan of the R888s (or any R compound tire) for street use. YMMV.

I've run 16" R888Rs for tens of thousands of miles (multiple sets of course) albeit on a Carrera

My buddy put them on his 930 in those exact sizes you mentioned and drove it from coast to coast in both directions and we even ran into rain. He prefers them over the Nittos he replaced.

I’ve run the Pilot A/S of various generations on all my Porsches, air cooled and water cooled, here in Colorado. And my daily drivers as well. If you want a 4 season performance tire and don’t care about Nth degree performance summer driving, you can’t go wrong with them. I usually run them for 2 years.

Matt,

Are you running 16” rims?

Thanks

Yes. I’ve run the 205s on several different cars.

That’s good to know, my biggest concern with the R888r tire is getting caught in the rain. I definitely won’t be driving it cross country, it rarely gets out of the garage at all as it is. I live in Miami and thus concerned about getting caught in a downpour, which can happen quite often in the summertime. I don’t need the Michelin all season tire since we have only 1 season here, but it will perform best if/when I did get caught in the rain, thus the conundrum.

R888Rs are not known for being great in the rain, but I led an entire weekend rally while it rained both days and it was manageable. The only guy that spun out was on BFG Radial T/A if I remember correctly.

I will say more tire pressure goes a long way in the wet and negative camber DOES NOT help. I run pretty low cold pressures and lot of negative camber so it's not ideal in my case!

I’m wondering what you guys think about pairing the Nitto 555RII on the rear with the Nitto 555GII up front, their website says these pair well together. These are for my DP 935 (which is far from stock), so I’d prefer more grip in the rear. I think it might be the best option for me being in Miami, since I’d rather not have Michelin all seasons, or Toyo drag radials, which will be quite slippery in the rain.

https://www.nittotire.com/competition-tires/nt555rii-dot-compliant-competition-drag-radial-tire/

Do I hear consensus that this is the best option for my DP 935 residing in Miami.
