I have no clue: Selling '89 Targa

I've had the car 15+years and knowing what I paid for it and what they're selling for, something isn't adding up...I've never not lost money on something.

I'm 61 and have never sold anything online (or sold a car for that matter), so I have no idea about how that works. Recent surgeries have made the car hard to drive, and I have no family to pass it on to as the next steward, so I guess it's time to sell, but I have no idea where to begin.

Quick bio on the car: second owner, 130K miles, all original, all records, top-end rebuild (done by a member of the forum here), white, paint/body/interior in great shape.

I think it's a nice car that would make someone happy, I just don't know the best way to find them.

Take a bunch of pictures and upload them here. Then give us as much information possible on condition, maintenance, needs, etc. People here will give you a range of values.

There's a classified section here as well where you could list it. That's one way. The way a lot for people sell is on Bring A Trailer Auction site. May not be for you as this is your first sale, but maybe.

I would also contact your local PCA club. People are always looking for cars there but are not usually ready to pay retail. Stay off FB and Craigslist.

You can also go on BaT and look up historical sales for 89 Targas.

Good luck.

Nick

Thanks Nick, I hated to add pics for fear of being accused of spamming the site, but I will. Listing the car here sounds great as folks know what to look for and I won't have to "sell" it.

Do you have a number in mind? I could swing by in August, if its still available, on my way to Folly Beach and have a look at it.

BTW, for selling, build the story. Be as specific as you can about what has been done during your time as care taker. If you know the history of the car, put that in the add. Like I said, build the story. When I sold my 85 Cab, people actually commented on how well written my ad was. Most of that was thanks to the folks here for letting me bounce ideas off of them.

No idea, I never thought I'd sell it. Happy to have you stop by, we're about an hour east of I-77 as you head south past Charlotte

And this is how matches get made. I’ve sold two cars here by starting MP discussion threads, and never made it to listing the cars. You just never know.

Please post pictures when you get a chance. It’s really the best way to assess these cars from afar.

I've gotten a few very nice PMs, which frankly surprised me. Not that they were nice, of course, (I wouldn't expect anything else from the folks around here), but that there was an active interest.

I'd like to post some pics once I figure out how to do it.

A word to the wise… check the post history of anyone sending you pms. See if they are really a member of the community. Often times it’s flippers and scammers blowing up your pms. They can be very polite when try to separate you from your car/money.

I know what you mean. I didn't envision selling my 85 Cab.... but life has a way of changing your view of "never".

Take some pics, upload them to your computer, or login with a smartphone and post them. If you need more help with posting pics, let me know.

Right up to the point you tell them "no thanks, I think I'll see what offers I can get". Then they get a little pissy. Had that happen when I sold my Cab.

OK, here we go trying to upload some pics...(note: the one headlight trim ring has not been painted yet b/c the Rennline LED install proved to be a bit challenging. If you mistakenly have the backside of the rim painted, nothing will fit together)

Oh, it's on a lift because I'm redoing the lights (tail/markers/etc)

Nice. I’ve always had a soft spot for triple white.

Nice Car,, Dont sell it here. I have sold Hundred 911 and never once did anyone here buy one..
Mostly low ball hunters and scammers on this site now.

Good sites are Bring a trailer (BAT)or Ebay..
Facebook Market Place is good now.

You might try and work with a local partner on BaT. They'll take a cut of the sale but you'll likely more than make up the commission in sales price and then you don't have to worry about navigating the site, shooting videos, or doing a photoshoot.
