Feedback upgrade from 3.2 to cayman gts?
Good day, love my 84 3.2, had it for over 25 years. But, I just don’t use it enough throughout the year anymore. I have my I on a 2025 4.0 cayman gts. The 3.2 will bring fair money as it is in excellent condition. I believe I would drive the 4.0 more and use it for 4 hour trips to upstate ny on a regular basis. Just a general question…… will I regret this move?!?
Thanks, Dave

Yes but life is full of regrets. It’s also sad to let a car sit when you know a different car is more suitable for the job.
Even though I love the air cooled cars, I would get the new one because I wouldn’t want to be tethered to a car just because of emotions when there are places to go …..

Only you would be able to answer this question, but only after the fact. Look at it in reverse; which would you regret more: not seeing the car you’ve loved for so long, or not enjoying your planned 4 hour drives in a more modern car?

Nice to have such decisions in life, right? Yes, the road trips are a big plus. I have taken the 3.2 many places in the past. I just don’t trust it that much for longer trips. Great car, been to Nova Scotia, Montreal, Chicago, Watkins glen vintage festival, all from se pa. Thanks guys, always appreciate another point of view

When I sold my ‘86 Carrera, after about a dozen years, I took some of the money and bought a 996 40th anniversary. I have zero regrets. I drove the car everywhere for a bit more than 2 years. There was never the age old question of,”can I take the Carrera today?” Like I did with the other car. I just drove it, including a few longer drives. With hindsight, I’d make the same choice today.
I love old Porsches. I’ve owned quite a few. The engineering and GT level comfort of the new ones is just so much better.

Look at it this way, if you don't like it you can buy another 3.2. You may lose a couple bucks, but it is not like you are selling a car that you will likely never be able to buy again. If you had a very rare car that was appreciating 20% a year I would have you really think hard about it. The 3.2 will be around the same price next year probably so you can have fun, or not, in the Cayman and decide then.

I sold my 3.2L Carrera and bought a 981 Cayman without regret. Although, my use is different than yours as I only track these. After breaking a CV at WGI, failing brake light switches at Summit Point and losing 3rd gear at PittRace I sold the 3.2L and bought the 981 which has been nothing but reliable. I don’t worry about being 6 hrs from home and needing to pack up after 1 day of 3. I also find the driving dynamics somewhat similar as both my 3.2L and 981 can and will under steer. The only real difference is if you lift (TTO) where the 981 will rotate controllably. I don’t miss the 3.2L but if I find a clean Jerry Woods built 3.0L SP911 I could be tempted.

4.0 GTS is a fantastic car. Its fast, its comfortable, its reliable, it handles great. It is modern in a sense but feels like a 2010 car not a 202x.
It is better in every objective way than a 3.2. It is not as cool or dramatic to drive. Really a differnt thing. I drove 2000 miles round trip with my son in my 718 GTS to porsche experience center a few weeks ago. Completely comfortable for 20 hrs.

Dramatic to drive. I love it. I usually call them deliberate to drive. They require a higher level of attention and engagement.

A few years ago, I drove a 2008 base Cayman from Clinton, AR to Suffolk, VA, straight through, at 30 mpg. Try doing that in an air-cooled Porsche.
