Engine number decode?
I'm checking out a '71 E on Sunday. The MFI must have burnt out the original 2.2 because the OO had two rebuilds on it . Anyway, the car currently has a 2.7 with major rebuild 12k ago.
The engine number is 6561640. From my recollection, the second digit reflects the year of the casing. Correct? I'm not up on 2.7's except that they had failures that required rebuild, and once done, they were a strong motor. Smaller valves, larger ports, higher revs. did these change at all during the mid 70's? What was the compression ratio on the stock motor? Any thoughts on what the stock cam profile was? When a stock 2.7 is desmogged, what do you think realistic torque and hp ratings to be? BTW, the car does not have CIS. now has webers. thanx joe Last edited by joetiii; 06-01-2006 at 10:30 AM.. |

Go to 3:00 on the fan surround...look straight down, you'll see an upright post in the engine case. The flat of that post faced to the right side of the car. The number should be stamped there...

I have been looking at early cars recently so I am very good at spotting this now. One tip I have is to bring a little towel with a spray of WD-40 on it in case there is caked on grease on there. Its a bunch better than using a finger to clean it off.

Thanx,
I Got the numbers from that spot. How/where do I go to see if the engine number is correct for the car?

Best I can tell it's out of a 911S Targa USA produced between 8/75 and7/76. If it's 49 state (non-Cali car) 8.5:1 compression, K-Jet FI 165 hp, 176# torque.
