Idea for trade - would this ever fly?

A thought occurred to me last night, but I may have just been dreaming. I'm always keeping an eye for the absolute perfect car for me - 3.2 Carrera, black, cabrio, tan/brown/natural leather interior, even turbo-look, if possible. It dawned on me I *might* be willing to part with 2 cars to get this, my 72 911T and 83 944. Am I nuts?

The 72 is in fairly good condition - approx. 135,000 kms, Euro car (Germany to Canada in the early 80s), no rust except for a bit of rot inside the front bumper (standard area, would be fixed before I let the car go), 5 ft. paint job, brand new bilstein sport shocks, new master cylinder, 7/10 interior, MA Shaw ducktail, several S options. Since I've had it, the maintanence has been meticulous (and documented). The 83 just had a complete body job done, and the body would be a 9 or 9.5/10, interior is a little ratty, but could be cleaned up fairly well. Odometer doesn't work, reads 120K miles, only stopped working in the last year or so according to PO, needs clutch work (again, I'd have done).

My main reasoning behind this thought is simply that I've always wanted a mid to late 80's 911. The power, styling, added comfort (over the 72), even added safety (we have a newborn in the house, so my mind is more safety-oriented now).

The only problem is I'm really not convinced I want to part with the 72. I absolutely love that car!! But if the right Carrera came along...

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Chris

Do it!!! Except for the cabrio part....get a coupe.....

Chris, Congrats on the little one. She looks adorable in the pics.

If you are interested, I have 3/4 of a quart of POR-15 rust paint (semi-gloss black) and I bought an angle grinder if you want to clean up your front pan. I also have lots of the POR-15 rust remover. I took Friday off and two friends and I did mine in a day. I found some surface rust under the factory coating but nothing had progressed.

Wow, Richard, I'm surprised! I thought you of all people would counsel me to keep the 72!

Sorry, but after driving your targa and the boxster, I'll never again buy a summer car that's not a cabrio, unless it's a 930 (and even then - rare, but they do exist!)

I'll get in touch maybe next weekend about rust repair - not at the top of my priority list this week!
