Value of a 356 motor
A friend of mine is looking at a homebuilt plane powered by a 356 engine. He's thinking of buying the plane and selling the motor. What's something like this go for in the market?
It's a 1600 Super 90 from a 1962 356B. It's only had 15 minutes of run time since a complete top-end (new p&c's, rings, re-built heads). Fan shroud is missing. Distributor is MIA but the owner thinks he knows where it is. Thanks.

These days, 356 motors are about the same as early 6 cyl motors. So, if it's a good looker and checks out compression and leak down wise (I know you said it was just rebuilt, but I'd want to see some numbers), then you could get towards 5K, IM(very)HO. What with some pieces missing, either find them and make them pretty, or subtract for same.
Justify? Well, cases and crank worth at least 1K. New PC's cost close to 2K. That's only 2K left for the rest including the recent machining. Plus, it's an S. That's best I can give you and I'm no expert. I just noticed no one wanted to take even a guess in this many days. |
