What do you guys think this car is worth?

Decent body, cracked rear bumper
Whipers dont work
Door locks dont work
Interior is decent
Leaking oil pretty bad but still drives "ok"
new rebuilt stearing rack

$6 to 8k if the engine really is on it's last legs and it has a salvage title...

get real!!!

Ok!
Since we are talking about my car. Please show me some comps for a 964 that is in reasonably good condition but needs a complete engine rebuild.

$6-8k doesn't sound right. This doesn't even get you a good roller anymore.

I think the salvage title is what devalues the car the most regardless of the motor condition.

I would hazzard a guess that a non-salvage, 100,000mile C2 coupe that is 16-17 years old, would have a "autotrader" price of 15-18K. Figue a 30% "salvage" reduction, and its an 11k-12K car.

Another "compare" would be deealer trade in of such a car is mired in the 13-15k range.. then perhaps a "salvage" penalty from their.

I think 10K would be ok. A complete 964 rebuild will run $8-10K. A used 964 motor of unknown history is $5-6k

Then while the motors out, how's the clutch? Synchros? CV's? etc

I would think a salvage title 964 C2 coupe in good running condition would go for $15-19K. A 964 rebuild will cost $8-10K. You might do better parting the car out.

The car below SOLD for $16K in the pelican classifieds. Nice car, relatively low miles and non-salvage.

1991 Carrera 2
Cobalt blue exterior and cobalt blue partial leather interior. Woods polished wheels. Vent kit. 83K miles. Current asking price is $16,000 (updated 09/27/2006). Located in Utah (not driven in snow). Sunroof. Air conditioning. P01 Comfort Package.

Maybe I'm in the minority but, I wouldn't pay more than $7K for the salvage car in question.

thanks for all the comments guys, I am in no way trying to rip off greg, i just wanted to know what a fair price was for the car.

On my own searching these past months, i have been able to find fairly easily a non salvage car with 100k that runs for about 14k.

I would think the price range goes as follows, please agree or disagree if you will for me:

11-13k good running salvage title
9-11k need of TOP END rebuild
6-8k need of COMPLETE engine rebuild or new engine
4-5k as a roller

am i about right?

Logical as a structured assessment of value might seem, 911s just don't fall into price brackets like that.

There will always be people sending cars outside the country -- in those situations, the salvage title often means nothing.

There will always be people with a ready-to-go engine looking for a home. For them, the "bad" engine won't mean much.

Lots of other things, from color to options will swing prices all over the place.

Porsches are not commodities like other brands. You don't get a lot of chances to buy. You have to be able to calculate what a project is worth to you -- based on the maximum likely cost of repair plus transportation, opportunity cost, etc. and subtract that from the ultimate market value.

First off, i'd suggest finding a mechanic that is comfortable working on 964s. They are somewhat complex cars. Get to know real world costs of top end overhauls, clutch jobs, etc. And remember that with any repair, you'll only be adding a small fraction of the actual cost to the car's value.
