88 Carrea...value?

Just want to get a few ideas as to what the general concensus is to value on this car. Its being sold by a dealer. Carfax looks clean (thanks deanslist.us)

No record of the engine ever being opened up, is this a huge thing on these at this mileage?

I can purchase it for 28000.

Car looks very nice. That's 993 money. If you really want that year and that's your favorite color combo go for it.

That IS pretty close to 993 money, but I have to agree with jr964, if that is what you want go for it..although $28k is a few thou high in my opinion. Often times asking prices are high because they foresee being talked down. I would say that I would feel comfortable giving $23k-$24k for this car. Above all, it is a Porsche and unless you don't plan on driving it, plan on all the usuals with it. A PPI should reveal how it was driven. Hell, low mileage may mean it was in 10 open road races, 5 driver's Eds, and fifteen autocrosses and now the owner needs to move on to something with more power. Or, it could mean showroom quality thus justifying the high cost. Check the rear sway bar mounts for cracking or replacement, and tire wear on the inside and outer walls from fender wear in cornering.

That is a tad high if you ask me.
6 & 7 rims. which are OK.
Yes low miles but you might have to replace your oil return tubes and other seals.
I would not be afraid of a car with twice the milage and good records and a clean ppi if it ment a price of 19K.
New brakes?? What does that mean. New pads? or rotors calipers ect..
If rotors have been replaced at 39,000 then I would think this car has seen some real hot driving.

It looks like a pretty nice car, I bet nobody here would sell it that cheap if it belonged to them. Then the price would go up.

I think this is a relatively fair asking price for a pretty low mileage car IF it's solid and needs little in the way of repairs or maintenance. This car looks pretty nice from the pics and doesn't seem to be abused from what I can see (or the detail shop did a darn nice job to erase a lot of dirt and/or wear and tear!).

$28k is not in the ballpark for a 40k mile 993. I would bet a low mileage 993 that is in nice shape is still well over $30k.

I would expect a 40,000 mile 3.2 Carrera that has been well kept to not need any sort of engine work. The 3.2 motor is pretty solid and the '88's were one of Porsche's best cars. I'd be more apt to question the car if in fact the motor had work done at such low mileage.

New brakes at 40k isn't too serious if it was just pads. A few autocrosses will erase a stock set of pads in a hurry. I agree that if the car got new rotors and other parts, she's been run hard in timed events at some point.

The car has been lowered, so you need to check out how and why that was done.

Good luck!

Very good point.

At 40,000 miles and at that price tag, everything should be pretty spot on. I agree with hb that it's not a deal breaker, but I'd be checking out that front bumper assembly and impact shocks. If this car was $19k, then I don't think I'd care as much...

Plus no tail and front spoiler.... This is not correct. A tail will set you back another $800-1000.

I think it's too much.

I bought 2 88 Carreras in the last 2 years for $17k and $18.5k.
The mileage is low, but it's not sub 20k (super premium on those).
These cars can go untouched up to 200k miles.
I would look for an alternative.

If you are still looking for an 88 Carrera, send me an email. I am in the process of purchasing an RS America, and if all goes well with PPI, my 88 will be for sale. 70k mile car, red/black, new clutch, spoliers, etc.. Mint car. No stories.

Here in the northeast, a dealer would list that car for over 30K.

BTW this car is at a dealer .... in Nevada.. Sport Haus Motor
Sales.

http://www.sporthausinc.com/cars/porsche/2422/2422.htm

This dealer always seems to have a lot of P-cars (many 74-89 911s)
in stock. I have no direct experience with them, but I have read
on the forums that they tend to be over-priced and so-so on the
value ratio, and I remember someone had a PPI done with them
themselves (bad idea) and wasn't happy with how it was done. If
you are going to buy this car from these people, do some major
googling on them to see how they rate...

If you are looking at red cars, what about this one in IN? Looks nice for $20K. Lots of updates and real clean.
