964..need advice
Fellas,
I could really use some advice here... I've tracked down a nice, local, alpine white 1990 964. What I like: 1. Car has been professionally maintained with records at a local shop 2. 76,000 miles 3. 2 owner car (current owner has owned it since 2000) 4. Looks nice and has been well cared for 5. Purchase price...$18K What *bothers* me: 1. Cylinder/Head leakage...the car is pretty dry with no obvious weeps around the cylinder/head mating surface. I've been reading and doing some research and it just seems like some of these cars leak and others don't. Is it something to go ahead and budget for now? 2. Tiptronic. I go back and forth on this. When I had my other 911s, I would invariably have to work the clutch in stop and go traffic, or do my leg press when getting through the front gate at work. I often yearned for a Tip. I also have *slightly* bad knees (snowboarding as a kid), and there have been times when it would have been nice to have some clutch relief. Not sure what it is like to drive a Tip, but I do know they have been pretty reliable transmissions. If it drives like my buddies Mazda sport sedan with "sport shifting" I'm not so sure I'll like it very much. If it has nice, firm, snappy, shifts then I think I can grow to like the setup....a test drive will reveal more. The kicker is that I can get the car for $18K. I figure even if I have to shell out at some point for machine work on the motor to fix an "inevitable" leak, the buy-in offsets some of the pain (hell, at that point, I might just try and find a low mileage '92 or later motor). Finding a *nice* SC or Carrera is difficult...as rare as hen's teeth, so that's not a likely option...hell even Dallas is scarce. Thoughts? R/ Dustin |

Dustin, take a look at this month's (May) EXCELLENCE mag. There is a great article on the 964 on page 60. I would probably want documentation on the leak repairs and valve guides. The tip is nice but hard to sell and expensive to fix. If you are confident in the car it could be a nice car for you.

That sounds like a fair price, but not a great price. Have you driven the car yet? I think you'll figure it out pretty quickly if the tip is for you or not.
Good luck |

You may already have posted there, but Rennlist has a vibrant 964 community.
They also have a running purchase price sticky. Best of luck. I am a 964 convert.
