1971 T w/3.0 Value less or more?
 

Hello all-

I am contemplating selling my 1971 T. It is a very original, rust free car in Albert Blue with deep 6 Fuches and a 901 5 speed. It also sports a carerra fender oil cooler with all new lines. It is still a stock looking narrow bodied car although the paint has a few flaws. Other then aftermarket seats, the interior is very clean including complete door pockets and near perfect dash.

Here's the thing, it has a 1978 3.0 SC motor in it with CIS. The motor is in very good shape and leaves no oil spots or smoke in it's path. It looks like it was rebuilt recently but I have no way of documenting that fact. With the early exhaust it sure is fast though.

Would the car fetch more if I could install an original 2.2 engine and sell the SC motor on the side? It seems to me that original cars bring the most $$ these days.

as a driver the 3.0 is better
but to a collector the original is golden
do you plan another older 911 soon
is so keep the 3.0 and buy a good body for it

if not sell the package original car and motor plus the 3.0

The engine you would install would not be numbers-matching; just type-matching. So it wouldn't add value at all.

The market will pay the same either way, in my opinion, but for me, the car would be far more deisrable with the 3.0. I've had an SC-powered early car and it's a great driver.

If you do decide to put in a 2.2, I have a friend about 5 miles from you who would love the 3.0.

An undocumented 3.0 won't bring tons of money. And a good T engine will cost you as well. Not worth the hassle. If you decided to sell, it's best to get it over with. I personally hate working on a vehicle that I know I am going to sell. It's like having to go to work, knowing you'll get laid off in 4 weeks. ;)

I live just above Wonderland school and I know I have seen your car parked on one of the streets nearby, I have racked my brain to try and remember which street because I wanted to leave a note asking if you would consider selling your car-I have always wanted an early car that color.

I bought a 73 not long ago all fully rebuilt because frankly I was stunned at the price of rebuilt motor/trannies these days from when I last did one back in the early 80's. You might find selling your car "as is" a better financial move than putting the correct motor in the car. By the time you source everything mechanical and get it assembled it will be $10-12k and the car will not jump up anywhere near that much in resale value.

You never know what the next owner might want, maybe a 3.0!! It certainly wouldn't bother me.

When I was driving these cars daily, to and from work, we used to tear them apart, upgrade anything we could, throw anything not wanted into the dumpster. Pete Zimmerman who ran Redline for years used to work at a dealership and told me the dumpsters were full of sport seats, Fuchs etc. all being "upgraded" to custom by new owners. I'm sure more than a few chins will bounce off of keyboards reading this! Point is, back then a 3.0 would have been AMAZING, THE upgrade. Now with the factory police checking over every car and firing warning shots through the liver if you have the wrong year grommet on your car, correctness or factory issue has once again become key to value. This has brought a new kind of car to the public eye, the flawless restoration with $5,000 sport seats and $2,000 fog lights.

As you will not be able to install a matching number engine in your car, the price difference between an incorrect 2.2 vs an incorrect 3.0 won't be so much that you can't sell it as is and come out ahead in the long run.

I sold my '70E Targa about a year ago. This was when "Comments" were still allowed on the FOR SALE Forum. You should read through it to get an idea about how buyers -at least Pelican buyers- view a car with a non-original motor.

Or to save you time from reading the thread, no one seemed to care.
