Price check - 95 993, please

Looking at a 1995 993 early release with 77000 miles on the ODO that is correct. Silver over black with sunroof. Records from day one. Second owner has owned since 2001 and has put on less then 7000 since buying. Car has been in my town since new. Maintanied by local independant with solid rep. Clean CarFax (is that really worth anything?)

Car itself is a 9 out of 10 cosmetic wise. No rust, clean paint with no peeling with only 2 small dings in front bumber.

Interior is spot on. Non smoking and full leather that still smells new. Power seats and passenger side moves slower then drivers side. A/C needs help. Does not blow cold enough but that seems to be standard on these.

Engine pulls strong and has no signs of leaks. (put on lift) Tranny shifts with no slippage or balkiness. The only thing I did notice was the smell of rubber after the test drive that quickly went away. Smell came from rear wheel wells and underneath the car. No tire rubbing so perhaps the clutch is going? Records show no clutch being replaced.

Standard maint. every 15,000 miles - no major work done or needed per shops notes. All major components are stock and original (shocks, engine, tranny, rotors and the like).

So what is the going rate for these in SoCal or any where these days? I have done the ebay closed listing and current listing check. KBB shows value lower then what I would think. Flippers and dealers that have something in this range 95-97 are well above KBB but dont seem to be moving the stock. Excellence seems misguided. Miles seem low compared to 95-98 993's I have seen listed.

Party is asking $31,500.00

Any thoughts?

TIA

I wouldn't pay more than mid 20's. If you really love the color and you can actually drive it and you like it, upper 20's. 31k is a premium for a coupe with that kind of mileage. There are some dealers on this group maybe they can post some auction results for you. I have some cab sale results for February, 07. Good luck.

Dan, the cheapest I saw when I was looking earlier this year for a car as you describe was $27k. The guy was in a hurry to sell as a new 997 due to arrive. Otherwise, $29-31 for a nice car like that is pretty average.

We ended up with a '96 based on condition and records for which we willingly paid a premium. Records are not quite as important with a '95 as '96-98's but still valuable. If the color is something you like, I would say this is an average to good deal.

The '95s are not bringing the money the '96s are. High 20s is right for market average.

But here's the deal: if the car is right for you and you've looked at enough of them to know the feel is superior as well, go for it. A couple grand isn't going to matter two years from now when you walk to your garage and it makes you happy to see it there.

Hi Dan !
I agree with techweenie.
If it still has the original suspension, it will most certainly need replacement (with Bilstein or ?)
If it needs nothing other than that, and you like the car (hey, who can't like silver and black? ) then very hi 20s or very low 30s sounds reasonable to me.
77,000 miles isn't terribly hi for a 12 year old car; and a well maintained/garaged 993 can still be in very desirable shape and run great.
A good, documented service history helps add value, and should lessen worries of the buyer (Byers? )

Good luck Dan,

max

Thanks for the comments guys. I feel the car is a fair deal as long as a PPI is clean. I am trying to schedule one for next week that will focus on the machanicals. As usaul there are other people interested in the car but I am the only one who has asked if a PPI can be done.
The car would be for my wife (who was ready to seal the deal when they opened the garage) with me as an occasional driver. I am not giving up my 71.

Max, good to see your still around! You still get back to SoCal on occassion?

Not sure why folks see this in the mid 20s reading your description. It sounds like the car is in excellent condition with excellent local history. That's worth a lot, IMHO. I'd offer 27 and see where that takes you. Make sure they know you are serious and ready to pick it up the next day ... this all assumes good PPI.

By the way:A good carfax may not really tell you a whole lot but if it had a bad carfax, you'd be hosed on resale value. That's all.

Well, seller is having second thoughts about selling. At this point I have decided to continue my search and let this one go. The seller has my number and knows what I am prepared to pay, pending a PPI. So on to the next one. Told my wife not to get to excited about any one 911 at this point as it could be a long process finding "The 911" for her at a price that makes sense for us.
Thanks for the input and opinions.

Techweenie,

Out of curiosity, why are 95s bringing less than later model 993s? Is it mostly because of the latter's addition of varioram? I'm in the market for a 993 and I'm only looking at 95s because they seem to have fewer issues. Am I on the right track?

The only plus on the 95 is that it can't throw an OBDII code. That's a huge plus for many.

The 95 has the basket handle (third brake light), less power (mainly torque) because of being vario-ram-less and it's also a tad older than the later cars, of course. All in all those are not big differences, but they are reflected in the price. One more aspect is that there was np S (widebody) on the early 993.

We have a 95 and a 96 993. The differences are really minor.

With the Varioram you have more torque between 3,500 and 5,500. This is really nice, but does not change the carachter of the car.

For the same price I'd take a 96 (if ODBII was not an issue). But if a 95 is priced cheaper I would have no problems in buying one.
