Value of 1979 911 with 4200 miles
Hey guys, i have just found a 1979 911 with 4200 actual miles. It has been in heated storage for the last 25 years.
It is immaculate. What do you think the value is. It is a coupe black on black

I can't offer any help on what the car would be worth, but would love to hear what it actually sells for when (if) it is sold.
It would be interesting to hear the details about the "storage" too -- that might help others in determining its value. If it was driven for 4200 miles and then has been sitting idle for 25 years, I would expect it to have a different value than if it's been taken out and "exercised" once or twice a year. If it has been sitting idle, I would think that how the car was prepared before being stored would be a factor in determining value. Also, if it is being sold "as-is-where-is" straight from storage, it would be valued differently than if it has been carefully serviced and is now up-and-running. |

Sloan has two SC's with under 5000 miles. One is a Targa, the other a coupe. Both are priced at $50,000.
Cars of this vintage with essentially zero miles on them are no longer cars. They are collector items, museum cars or serious concours cars. You'd be foolish to buy such a car and expect to drive it much. You either A) lose a ton of money on depreciation or B) find out what old seals that haven't been lubricated much do when you starting driving (lots of leaks...) or both. I think Sloan knows what he is doing and would agree with the $50k asking price for a starting point. Jay 90 964, 84 3.2 |

Thanks guys for your comments. I thought I could use it as a daily driver, but it may be better just to look at it.
I will, however, ask about the details of the storage and the condition of the seals.

It seems the true collectible and museum cars must have under 10,000 miles on them. If you bought this this 4200 mile SC for $45,000 and put 40,000 miles on it in 3-4 years, you could potentially loose $30,000 in a hurry after you spend a few thousand fixing oil leaks, putting fresh rubber hoses on it and new tires. (just my opinion, but I think it would be a sin to start driving a 4200 mile '79 SC and put wear and tear on such a time capsule...) |

Hey guys, if it were $25,000 would you buy it?

Then I'd go buy a $15,000 SC and drive that around while I invested the profits in a mutual fund, CD, stocks, etc... |

What's up with the "auction car" writing on the windshield?
Why the Euro headlamps? Why the weird floor? Where is this thing stored? |

And yea, what is that floor? Is this in some eccentric's fall-out shelter? Is there other stuff around from 1979? There must be some "story" behind this thing. I'd love to hear it! |

This is what was described in the email to me:
SHE DOES REALLY HAVE 67 HUNDRED KILOMETERS. SHE IS THE ORIGINAL BEAUTY. THE PREVIOUS OWNER PUT 40 CLASSIC CARS IN A STORAGE VAULT FOR 25 YEARS. THEN HE DIED. SINCE HIS WIDOW DIDN'T EVEN LIKE TO DRIVE SHE HAD THE EXECUTOR AUCTION OFF ALL 40 CARS. I BOUGHT 4 OF THEM THROUGH A SEALED BID TENDER AUCTION. I AQUIRED THIS AWESOME PORSCHE 911 A CARRERA 4 AND 2 MERCEDES BENZ 500 SL CONVERTIBLES, ALL IN IMMACULATE CONDITION. I AM SELLING THE PORSCHE BECAUSE I AM BUYING A HOUSE

This car has a Carrera tail that was not introduced until 1984. The Carrera script on the rear deck lid is also obviously not right...
It could be a Euro with the small rear bumper guards, km readout (6700 km is about 4163 miles) Euro head lamps and Euro tail lights. If the car sat for an extended period of time, there could be tons of problems if it was not stored correct as competentone mentions way above on this thread. This thing needs a PPI for sure. $25k might even be too much if the car has been stored improperly. All kinds of stuff can happen to the mechanicals, paint and fabrics if it's stored wrong... |

They're looking like 7's and 9's on the car and the suspension is NOT set at euro height. Lots of stuff does not add up to me but surely worth digging into further.
As far as the 2 Sloan cars go... he can list em for sale at that price as long as he likes, I dont think there are more then a handful of buyers anywhere near those prices. If you wanted to sell a car like Sloans two back to him i doubt he would offer you anywhere near that price, I would guess 30% less would be his bid. The car in question is clearly not unmolested so I would not expect to present it as such.

You guys are right, something doesnt look right. If its for real contact
Road Scholars out of the Carolinas (look them up on the web). I think the guy's name is Kevin and they buy up all the low milage cars they can find as fast as they can find them. The $25k is easy if its the real thing.
