88 Coupe for 14.5k but with known accident damage
Hi,
I just saw a car today, 88 coupe black/black. 15k but the guy would do 14.5 Paint was quite nice, not clear if original or not. Some interior wear - cracked dash, one hole in the sport seats, puffy visors, but nice headliner. A wierd wet/rust spot on the Carpet below the drivers pedal (wierd). Drives quite decent, 144k miles, shocks a little gushy. Wierd wind noise, but the window was just repaired for the motor so maybe some seal did not get replaced right. G-50 shifts decent, strong power. But .... the sticker under the "hood" was missing so I couldnt right down the options. The fact that it was missing and that the paint was so nice on the hood made me a little suspicious. I just did a carfax and damn at 137,000 miles there is a note "Vehicle Inspected for Accident Damage to front. A vehicle inspection completed by your dealer or professional inspector is recommended". A called the guy back and he needs to call his cousin (the owner) to learn more. Carfax does not say it is salvage, just that it fails the "accident indicator" so that the accident check is not good. Personally I am taking out a loan for this car so I need to be real careful I think I will pass - also I wouldnt want to ever have to sell this car and do explaining to potential buyers. Dang I thought I might have found the car. I will find out more in the next few days what really happened. The seller has 2 other people coming to look at the car.. hope they do a carfax too or they could be in for a surprise. I know that this is a reality out there -- because Porsche's are sports cars, and are driven fast, and/or get a lot of attention - accidents are a reality. But how much does it lower the value of the car and/or would YOU buy one knowing this?

Update - the guy got back to me - he called his cousin, who said it was a hit and run, and $2,900 worth of damage and he can get me receipts for the repairs done if I want (jeez - don't go to too much effort!) . For now, I'm staying away from this car, since you can never undo what's on Carfax and I don't want to have to explain something to the next owner...
