feedback on 87 Carrera price

Looking at an 87 black/black coupe. Two owner, just under 100k, paint starting to craze, original clutch. New tires, regular oil changes, maint. history. Asking $19,000.

What are the significant areas that must be performed (unique to these cars) during the PPI? Unless this price seems way out of line, which I don't think it is, I am prepared to make an offer.

Please let me know if I'm off the mark.

Thanks again
Matt

What is your offering price?

I would figure a clutch replacement is due pretty soon. You might be able to get 10,000-20,000 miles out of the clutch yet, but age can take it's toll too on the pressure plate, etc.

How bad is the paint? Would a good detailer be able to get the paint back to a decent state? Even if the paint is showing it's age, the car is worth more in it's original paint job from Germany.

You have to assess the basic mechanical issues with these cars to see where you're at. Has the alternator, starter, brakes, shocks and other mechanicals been refreshed recently? The 100k mark means that some of this stuff may be due for replacement either from failure or just preventative maintenance.

If the car carries it's original paint in fair to good condition, has a very good set of records, does not have any major oil leaks or major mechanical issues (they all have SOME issues though), has an intact and presentable interior, $19k is a good asking price. Maybe $16,000 to $18,000 is a good selling price point depending on what it needs.

If it needs a full repaint, needs a clutch and other major mechanical issues, $15,000 to $17,000 might be all it's worth... 1987 to 1989 911's are desireable cars and continue to carry a premium over the early 3.2 915 equipped cars.

Good luck,

Jay

1987 Carrera

I purchased a 1987 Carrera Coupe with 74K approximately 6 months ago. The PPI only showed a few small oil leaks and a bad left rear shock. The car was immaculate!!!! Front end respray many years prior due to rock chips otherwise the original Guards Red paint was 9/10. The black interior was 9/10. No prior accidents or bodywork.
Anyways, becuase the car was 20 years old many of the rubber hoses were found to be bad when the engine was pulled to change the clutch. By the way, the 1987 cars had terrible factory clutches. Mine need a new clutch, clutch hydraulic hose, oil hoses, brake hoses, new shocks, etc the total bill was 12K. That included no engine work other than a major service. The car is know burning a quart of oil every 800 miles which means I need a valve job = 4-8K depending on the shape of the P&C's. My point is, these cars a twenty years old and parts are not cheap! Be prepared to spend some money.
Regards, Mark

Burning one quart/800 miles does not automatically mean you need a rebuild. This topic has been extensively discussed on this forum. 1 quart/800 miles is well within Porsche's specs of 600-800 miles per quart. From what I have read on this forum, once you get below 500 miles/quart AND you see blue smoke (not just on startup) you should worry. You are a long way from that.

Also, I noticed in an old thread of yours that you are using synthetic oil. That will likely contribute to higher oil consumption.

Jay

I offered 17k assuming it has a clean PPI. I have not heard back.

Oh well

What do you mean by "paint starting to craze?" Do you mean a bunch of little cracks in the paint? That would not be normal for a factory paint job regardless of how old the car is. I would double check to see if the paint is factory original or a repaint.

I made the offer, but haven't received a response from the seller. Either he's mad or sold it to someone else. I'm still looking for now.
