Question Any buying going on here?

Just wondering how many people actually buy a Porsche from the Pelican or Rennlist classifieds? I would think that most people who frequent these boards already have one or more Porsches and hit the classifieds looking for parts, not another car. A number of ads I've looked at have been bumped several times by the seller with a reduced price and in some cases sellers are practically begging for someone to make an offer.

Anyone have a feel for the buying/selling action here, or on Rennlist?

I've noticed the same thing.

Market seems to be slowing down due to the credit/housing crunch.

I bought my 75 911S from a Pelican on this board after shopping all the usual places. Great car and great person to deal with. True that most already have a P car but it is an ever changing world--just look at the list of cars posted under some names. Though anyone can post on the for sale list, cars for sale by reputable members are worth the wait.

I still follow the for sale ads for cars I'd like to own and find, quite often, the "sold" announcement being posted a short time later. No data on how many, but my feeling is this board is one of the better places to post if for no other reason than potential buyers seem to be a bit more serious than those on eBay or craigslist.

I found my car on craigslist in May. I had been scanning Pelican, Rennlist, and craigslist for a few months, though I wasn't really ready to pull the trigger until some time in April. I think I saved a decent amount compared to what I would have paid for a car from the Pelican or Rennlist classifieds, especially when I factored in the cost of inspecting and transporting a car from out of state.
I was originally looking for a Guards Red G50 coupe with spoilers and sport seats, but when I saw and drove my Zinn Metallic '84 Targa (it has the spoilers at least!) I couldn't say no.

There were a number of cars here that I was interested in, like SCs with 3.6 transplants and hotrod 914-6 conversions, but none of them seemed like great deals. Sure, I'd feel safer buying a car like that from an enthusiast site like this, but people here usually want too much for their cars IMHO.

I agree that these boards would be a great place to search out a car to buy, if you already have, or had, a Porsche and were familiar with Pelican and/or Rennlist. If you are new to Porsches, you might never know that this site even exists. Although I've owned several 911s in the B.I. era (Before Internet), I only found out about Pelican after buying my most recent one a couple of years ago.

I bought my SC from Pelican, and it was my first Porsche. I can't remember how I ended up here, it was either via search engine or directed from another site, but I found the site informative and the people helpful. Combine that with finding exactly what I was looking for and how could I resist?

I bought my current car from a Pelican. The PPO was a Pelican as well, and I got GREAT info on the car from both owners. I think I got a fair deal and the info from both PO's was a deciding factor.

I check all sources, including ebay.

Also http://www.oodle.com is good - it consolidates craigslist, ebay (as auctionpirhana), and others.

Great topic. I frequent the board quite a bit and find the marketplace discussions / parts for sale / Cars for sale / tech to be my hangouts. I purchased a car, purchased roughly $3000 worth of parts and have assisted a fellow pelican in the purchase of a very specific car.

The car I purchased was a 73T hot rod [RS Clone] w/ a 3.2 from a classified ran here. The car is a very solid car that was hand built by a veteran pelican, Speedo. I assisted a fellow pelican in finding a specified 1978 911 Turbo. The car, out of Illinois, is a barn find w/ 16,000 miles on it. The story is amazing. He will post the story when the car arrives in its new home in......Norway!

Baaed upon these experiences and actual transactions I definitely think the sale section serves a function. It provides a marketplace for like minded individuals to view highly individualized cars.

EBay serves a different function. Here is my pelican purchase. The Blue one.

My brief thoughts: Pelican is a great place to buy and sell, more of a true community. Rennlist classifieds are more like reading the funny papers.

Hey, it's a free listing to Porsche people. I have two friends who bought their cars off Pelican classifieds so it seems to be a good free place to put an ad.

If you are looking to buy an Porsche and especially an older one, what you really want is to buy an enthusiasts owned car.
I beleive that Pelican is the largest and most active community for porsche enthisiasts on the planet and i have had only positive experiences when looking for my dream car.

On ther ther side of the scale you have e-bay. I find it a dumping ground for older cars. Then you have classifieds section in PCA website. It is also mostly entusiasts but mainly for newer cars. The wanted section is not jammed down with hits but the few that look are serious.

I did not end up buying a car advertised on Pelican but i go alot of leads and fellow members are very helpfull in sending links to cars i missed out on in my Search.

I agree completely. I'm still shopping, checking the ususal places but the folks I've met here have all been first class. Rennlist has good tech boards but generally doesn't attract the number and quality of enthusiast cars as Pelican.

I've bought and sold a bunch of 911s since I started hanging out on this BBS, but actually only one from this board. I've found most cars here overpriced and/or the sellers confused by the marketplace equivalent of 'bench racers' commenting on pricing. Wayne's decision to cut out the 'peanut gallery' by eliminating the ability to reply on listed cars has helped a lot.

Now I'm testing the waters with a car for sale, so I'll soon see if it's all bench racers...

I found Pelican to be great for posting a detailed ad. I think my local buyer went from the local PCA site to Pelican via a link and pulled the trigger a few days later.

I would

I do want to buy. I am looking for a 356 and just posted WTB here.

Sure I would buy - not from a dealer though. So this might be a good place.

Happy if anyone can give me a lead.

I see a lot of cars on the f/s board that are modified. Usually not as easy to unload. Also, there is some fantasy pricing going on on some. I had sold my SC in 5 days. Reason? It was priced right.

I just made offers on two cars, neither offer was accepted. Both had issues and were priced a bit high. One was advertised here and the other on the PCA mart. Both owners are active Pelicanites. I am not looking for a deal, just trying to buy for the right price considering the amount I would have to put into the car to bring it up to a nicer standard once purchased.
