Valuation of 70T with Webers.

I'll be putting my 70T up for sale in the spring. Improvements include "new" Webers, rear springplate bushings, Bilsteins, rotors, pads. Shifter was also rebuilt and I've gone over the interior which was a mess (radio, gauges not working, etc.). Wheels have been refinished and tires are new. No rust.

Car needs a paint job (looks good in pics but has scratches and dings up close, windshield (pitted) and second synchro crunches.

I am selling it because, as I look at the money yet to be invested, I really enjoyed driving and working on my 79 SC more (purists will howl). I am thinking $11.5. My math is: Current market for excellent example about $18K, minus 2K for the tranny job, and $4.5K for paint and windshield (estimates received if I strip car).

Any comments would be appreciated.

Ulrich

Ok, I have already received 3 PMs. Thanks but I am not looking to sell right now. There are still a number of electrical issues and a cold start problem which I will fix before I can sell the car with a clear conscience. I just wanted to see if my selling point is in the ballpark.

Ulrich,
You are severely underpricing this car. I paid in the low 20s for a car that was no where near as original. Coupe are strong sellers. Go to early S look in classifieds they have a sticky that will help you value your car.

I think current market value on a very nice "T" is $20k to $30k (I've seen ultra nice T's at $75k), so don't under estimate this hot market... You've already got 3 PM's in a day at what you are thinking, so you know just from that fact that it's severly underpriced. Add in the very, very favorable Euro to US Dollar conversion factor right now and lots of these cars go to Europe and such because they are so cheap when you convert the currencies. $10,000 in USD is roughly 6850 Euros right now. So, a foreign buyer is gaining 3150 Euros per $10k just from currency conversions. At $11.5k USD, your car is priced at 7876 Euros. Hell, I've got 2 911's already and I'd wire transfer you $11.5k in a heartbeat for that sweetheart without asking any more questions or wasting time on PPI's (just kidding, my wife wouldn't appreciate another 911 that would displace her toy in the garage - we're full up...).

There have been threads about current costs for transmission rebuilds and they are exceeding $3000 for a pro to completely refresh the trans, so don't under estimate that cost either.

I'd start closer to or above $20k. If you get zero action at that price, you can always come down. You can't go up on price...

Before you go to repaint the car, visit a top notch detailer and see what he says about the paint. Good detailers (not paint people) can work magic with older paint even though you may think it needs a repaint. A good detail may run $300 to $500 and would add thousands in value verses painting it for $4500.

Rust free tubs with the rest of the parts to go with it in baskets are $10k now.

Depending on what you have in this car already, you could freshen the trans, get some paint work done and fix a few of the other flaws you want to make right and recoup all your money and then make some too...

Good Luck!

Thank you Jay and all those that responded. I did not realize the market had exploded quite so much.

I might have a look over on German ebay, since I am fluent in Deutsch putting an ad together won't be a problem, except for the technical terms (rear springplate bushing?). Of course I would have 0 feedback, assuming my american ebay ratings don't get transferred, which can be a red flag to some buyers. They may think I am a scammer.

I've been watching this car which seems to be a very clean example. With 12 hours to go, unless there is a bidding frenzy, it will seem to go for high teens. Unless people are just too annoyed at the completely unreadable all upper case description to bid on it.

It does seem odd.

I'd agree $11.5 is too low but I think 20K is too high for a car with known mechanical problems and if paint is marginal. I am not saying someone won't pay that much you never know, throw it up on ebay and see what happens. You do get a lot of Euro eyeballs on ebay but people seldom pay top dollar since you generally buying a car sight unseen w/o a PPI, ebay is a little bit of a crapshot and cars sell at prices where that uncertainity is priced in.

Good example. Brought $19,103... Add in shipping and the typical $2000 you have to spend on any 911 once you bring her home and you're in the $20k range quickly.

However, there is $10k of work waiting on this car too with the admittedly average paint and all the non stock mechanical modifications. If you want strictly a driver, then the price is right. If you want a very original car to show or, well, to just be very original, then there is plenty of work to be done yet on this car. I am NOT bashing this car.

I'll stand by my comment that very nice T's are $20k to $30k.

Its not what you spend to "BUY" the car, its what you or the next owner will spend to " fix" and "keep" the car. Why wait until spring? This is a great time of year to sell a car.

So the car needs electrical work, a tranny and possible paint? Say you price the car at 15k for example...........would you still be happy to own the car when you have 30k into it? When you look at other 30k cars now - does the same money buy a better car or worse car?

If you know that you're going to sell it - don't put any more $$ into it. Be as honest as you can ( which it seems that you already are) and work to find a good home for the car. The new owner will surely have to be prepared to put some $$ into the car - just as you did while you owned it.

Looks like a solid start for someone and that you can you use the proceeds to improve your other car.

Happy New year.

Jim

at $11k you will have people camping on your doorstep. in fact that wouldn't be a sale price it would be a gift.

my guess is that NICE T's are $20k +. VERY NICE T's are $30k+.

that car shows VERY well in pics (don't they all!) and i think would be a good ebay candidate.
