SoCal PPI
I know there must be a Porsche dealer/shop on every corner in SoCal, but I would like opinions on the following situation.
If a well-known, very reputable shop in the SoCal area totally restored a car (body, mechanicals, suspension, etc) and that shop is "above reproach" as far as their reputation is concerned and considered one of the best, then do you still have a PPI performed? And if so, where do you have it done if the shop doing the restoration is one of the best? |

Tough call... but being the cautious type, if I was going to pay what I'm sure is being asked for a car as you describe I would pay the extra $$ to an independant shop for a PPI. There may be something the first shop missed or has come "undone" since the restoration. If I was local I may forgo the PPI since I could take it back to the original shop in case something comes up later, but being across the country it will give you piece of mind.
As you said, there are a lot of shops in So Cal - if the one who did the resto is the best, have it sent to the second best.

Depends
I think I would have the PPI done. Several years ago I took an older 911 to a reputable shop here in San Diego and they took me to the cleaners. Or you can do a red eye out here and look at the car.......and you still wouldn't know. The answer? there is no correct answer but a PPI will make you feel better. I just had one done in Tucson. The mechanic found stuff that is going to cost me. I bought the car anyway.

I would have a PPI done. Not sure there is any shop that is 'above reproach' because the vehicle owners often draw the line at work that should be performed.
As for who the PPI shop should be, well as you say, there's one on every corner. If this is a specific So Cal car, PM me. I also need a PPPI in Florida, as it turns out.

Any first rate Porsche mechanic will balk at releasing the car for a PPI at another shop. That's their right. And it's your right to refuse to purchase the car if he does this. That being said, if the Porsche mechanic is as good as you say, he has a reputation to protect. Odds are, if you purchase that car, and something significant is wrong with it, he'll do the right thing and help you solve the problem immediately.
(But let's say the specific car you're referring to happens to be a white 911E, and the personal car of one of the best early 911 Porsche mechanics in North America. If you're talking about that car? I doubt there is a higher quality early 911 for sale right now anywhere in the world.)
