Need help on 911 value, so I can buy a 930
Hey group,
I was facing some time away from work last year for medical reasons, so I bought a 1979 911 SC Targa to restore. I bought the car because it had documented 80,000 actual miles, did not drop a leak of oil (still hasn't made one drop on the garage floor over a year), blew no smoke (even on start up), and ran superb. On pre purchase inspection, found zero rust, even under battery, etc... Transmission shifts great through all gears and linkage is tight. Original rubber pedals look like 80,00 miles. When I inspect a car, the first thing I do is remove the rear light housings and see their exterior condition. The housings were pretty good - good enough to pursuade me to buy the car. I disassembled the body and interior and, over 7 months, gave her a very nice Grand Prix white base with 6 coats clear. I added electric leather seats from a 2004 996 and a 2" four-point restraint system. The car has a lot of pain-staking detail, too long a list to mention. HERE'S THE ISSUE - I NOW HAVE COME ACROSS A GREAT DEAL ON A 930 AND I CANNOT AFFORD BOTH CARS. Below are some pics of the car: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The previous owner professionally installed headers (no heater now) and I put in a custom "twin-muffler" exhaust. The car is a factory A/C delete. Dash is perfect. I have completely refurbished the top (and headliner) and it does not leak or whistle. The car has restored Gotti 16" all around and tires are at 70% tread. You could drive this car from Miami to Seattle and I doubt that you would have any problems. My question is, what can I expect to get for a car like this and what would be the best way to go about selling it. I have some time on the 930. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Because your car is "not factory original" it may take quite a while to sell, unless you are willing to go really low. Be prepared to "explain the painstaiking detail" and why it was worth doing to attempt recovering the money spent. To me, figure 25-50cents on the dollar of the amount you put into the car. To me its an $8K-12K car, depending on how a PPI turns out.

That's about the range I was thinking
I have bought several 911's over the years and I am not one of those that would be "shocked" that the world is not waiting to get their hands on this car. It's pluses are the low mileage, reliability, no smoke, leaks, comfort and such.
I personally like cars that have rid themselves of the accordion bumper parts - they also turn grey over time and never really align well. My gut was $11,000 or so - where's the best place to sell? Ebay, etc...

I have bought and sold a large number of 911's over the years and I try to stay on top of the market on a weekly basis. Do you have a documented history paper trail of service on the car? Also, you might want to consider putting the heat exchnages and the blowers for the heat back on, that would really open up more of a geographic area for you. Cleaning up the surface rust in the engine bay and removing the home made aero stuff on the end of the wing would make the car present a lot better, IMHO. I think 11k is a very good price for both buyer and seller on that car and I would expect you could get that in a reasonable amount of time. Post it here on Pelican and also try rennlist. I have found when selling cars on eBay you get a lot of traffic on the car but not a lot of real buyers, it does get the car out there in the public eye.

Thats not surface rust in the engine compartment - thats factory glue/gunk from the engine pad that I removed.

I would agree with trader's comments about the heat exch and the black appendix on the tail. I am not judging but they are a personal touch. I like the 996 seats, the RS door panels, the Iroc tail and the clean looking bumbers. If it is in good mechanical shape 11-12k would be a good start. |

Don't worry about it...
I should have cleaned the glue/gunk off before I took the pics...
The little "bat wings" actually are held on by three allen screws/bolts. In person, they look pretty cool. However I see your point. But - when I park the car, these are the items most complements are centered around. They're off in two minutes, anytime. I'll never add factory heat exchangers again - now that there are so many mini-propane heaters out there. I have one that hangs from the roll bar and is only 12" x 12". As long as I am careful not to overload the CO2, it is better than factory heat ever was. It is also great to be able to remove the top anytime I want the "open air" Porsche driving experience. Thanks to all for your input.

I’m not a Targa fan…but dam that car looks nice Jack!
You will love owning a 930…especially when 3g’s kick in ![]() I sold a 996 and bought my 930 entirely on PP’s classified, so I totally believe in the classified here. Try it and give it some time to work for you IMO ”did not drop a leak of oil (still hasn't made one drop on the garage floor over a year)” You sure the engine has oil in it? j/k ![]()

have fallen in love with the Targa. She's turned out to be a lot more fun than I expected. Maybe I'll add a turbo - who knows.

Those inside door handles and channel iron on the bottom of the door trim, along with that tail are going to turn off most 911 buyers.

As I stated in the post before yours, I'm keeping her. I plan on driving this car until the wheels fall off...
I put the handles on, bottom (aluminum) strip on the door and I love the unique fiberglass tail - and the two little wings are what most laymen (laywomen?) like about the car. If we were talking about a $100,000 L-88 Vette on the Saturday morning car television shows, I'd understand the purist point. However, she runs great, gets great looks and does what I want for less than $10K. I like a little wildness, to challenge authority and to think outside the box - this Karma has made a lot of money for my family over the years. I'm not an antique dealer - I'm a Porsche driving enthusiast.

I apologize.
They are going back on - I saw badges on the side of a black 911SC when I was younger and thought it came off well. I apologize for thinking you were the Porsche Police. It's just that I find it hard to see posts about a man who believed in changing the game and thinking out of the box to make a superior brand of driving cars - but if you own the car and change anything, you are somehow wrong...
Do you think they look good "low" on the front quarter panel, or do you think they would look better higher up? Please let me know what you think. THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]()
