Yup...but not too surprising. Follows the depreciation history of other water cooled Porsches. Boxsters are the 944s of the future...
I think 996s will be the 928s of the future as well, depreciation wise. |

Post expired. Not uncommon, especially at 100K miles, which means, despite the ad saying so, brakes, shocks, clutch are all close to replacement time. Could be a great start for a BoxsterSpec car though

I'm surprised how low Boxster prices have dropped, they are great machines. I would have thought that the combination of classic yet still fresh styling, a drop top roof and a nice handling chassis would have kept prices somewhat higher. I suppose that the combination of a faultering economy and large production numbers are hurting the market. If I had more parking space, I would love to add one of these to my stable. My 911 is far too extreme to take the wife out for a nice drive through wine country, so a reasonably priced Boxster would be perfect.
Makes me wonder how Porsche manages to sell new Boxsters?

I'm still waiting for a $4k Boxster to gut the interior, paint primer red,
and stuff a built 3.0 MFI in. Looks like it won't be too much longer.

I watch the Boxster ads as well and see that even 2000 models are now under 15K. Heck an "S" model can be had for that as well, if you search hard enough. BUT, the issue I have with the Boxster is not being able to work on them and the high cost of repairs and routine maintenance. Ad the fact that the rear main seal leak is still an issue with early cars and an engine replacement can cost 8k and you looking at a risky investment. See how much sheet metal you have to remove to get to the engine!! My 944 was a hell of alot easier to work on then these dolls, so do your homework, check prices at a dealer for repair/maintenance, take a look for repair/maintenance manuals and check all this out before getting drawn into a Boxster because its going for 10K!! Personally, I think they are beautiful great performing cars, but ownership and eventually break the bank on these cars. Maybe thats why so many are for sale and for so cheap!!!!

996 prices are falling too.
2000 coupe on Rennlist for 20k, nice color combo. Year 2000 ONE OWNER Ocean Blue Metallic over Savannah Beige (full leather, suede headliner) 6-speed C2 that I'd like to sell to make room for another car on order. The C2 is in phenomenal mechanical condition and turns heads as much (if not more, honestly) than any new Porsche, likley due to the combination of color and the Bilstein/H&R suspension which has the car sitting a bit lower than stock on the beautiful mesh Porsche Sport Classic rims. The car has a new transmission (brand new, no rebuilt stuff, done as a precaution since we thought we heard a noise) as of three months ago and is otherwise in perfect shape and has NEVER had a single issue -- the car is in better shape than its 90k-plus miles would suggest with not a drip under belly, no oil consumption issues and nothing a new owner would need to think about. Just get in and enjoy the sound of the FabSpeed mufflers at full song. Additionally, we just replaced the rotors, front and rear, and installed new Pagid blue pads. All service has been done by Beverly Hills Porsche (all books and records) and TRE Motorsports with alignment by Steve Alarcon. Oil and everything else has always been meticulously attended to since day one. Feel free to call or e-mail for references or questions of any sort. Asking price was $32,000 but due to financial issues this car MUST SELL IMMEDIATELY!!! I guarantee you won't find another nicer, this well done. Thanks for taking the time to read the ad. ![]()

I saw a 2000 Boxster sitting in a vacant parking lot last weekend. Priced $12,000. Wow.

its amazing, not to knock on water cooled motor cars or anything but it seems like they are depreciating alot harder and faster then the air cooled 964s and 993's its sad ,they are gorgeous looking and driving

I'd happily pick up another Boxster at under $10K, but every on at that price level has one or more of four big issues: salvage title, Tiptronic, extreme undiagnosed electrical or mechanical problems or 100K plus miles. Note also that the '97 is the only chassis not approved for 18" tires by Porsche, so that one year sometimes also sells at an additional discount.

It's to be expected because of numbers. How many 993s were shipped to the US? Around 25,000? The 200th thousand Boxster was build around 2 years ago. Also, IMO, Porsches are less special than they used to be back when they were aircooled and still hand-made. Now they have a depreciation curve worse than a Honda. |

A 2.5L Boxster with 99 THOUSAND MILES is less than 10k, and thats news?
A pre-2002 996 with 90 THOUSAND MILES is less than 20k, and thats news? Until you get way into the mists of air cooled times, the value of a Porsche is directly related to the mileage, end of story. |

A nice boxster for $10,000 would make a nice garage queen for the nice days. Does anyone know why the 1997 models can't have 18" wheels? I think the water cooled engines and transmissions are pretty durable too. I know some have gotten a bad reputation for a rear main seal leak but that really isn't something you couldn't live with or just fix. Porsche has released the repair parts to fix it once and for all so it seems. I would rather buy the old boxster than the old 996 because at least the boxster isn't an ugly 911. I wouldn't even need an S, just a 2.5 for gas saving fun or maybe even the 2.7. What is the history on engine and transmissions? When did they change engines and transmissions from 5 to 6 speeds?

This thread is amazing...I just received at $23K plus settlement on my totaled 1994 964 Targa from USAA. It was in great shape but had 102K on the ODO.
Wow.

With over 200,000 cars built, they will keep dropping as stated here (just as the 944). I remember seeing one in 1999 and thinking that it was one of the nicest looking cars ever made. Unfortunately, the more you see something, the less attractive it is (I am talking about cars). Destined for the $5000.00 and under car lot. These are great driving cars for this kind of money. Drive and enjoy.
Cheers

Boxsters and 996s can be had for great prices these days. A higher mileage 996 should be free of any RMS problems. Many of these cars are pampered 2nd and 3rd cars, and can be great buys with the service records. My preference is to buy a Porsche certified one, as I did with my Boxster.
I saw an 04 996 coupe on ebay with 33K miles for $43K buy it now. Heck of a buy on paper, but I wouldn't buy it on ebay.

A boxster with high miles should still be fine for weekend duty of cruising around. I just wonder if anyone has a boxster that they have owned since new and can tell us what to look for when buying these older boxsters.
