Advice and guidance needed please...
I'm looking to purchase my first 911. I've placed a deposit on a 1983 SC Coupe, with deal to pend on PPI results.
Mechanic checked it... body, trim, and electricals good to very good. Engine leak down indicates 60 lbs. compression and 50% leakage in #3 cylinder. All other cylinders check good. In your opinion, what are the chances that I might get 20k driving miles from this engine? Do you think engine failure is imminent given these specs? The seller and I have agreed on a price in excess of $12k pending the PPI results. What, in your opinion, would be a fair offer price to purchase with the now known engine condtion? Thank you all for your time and replies. Regards, mlfox |

Unless there is a piece of carbon stuck in the valve or a misadjusted valve in cylinder #3, you are looking at a rebuild long before you get 20K miles out of that engine. Plan for a rebuild. There are plenty of nice SC's in the 12K range for you to settle on one with an iffy engine. An engine rebuild is going to cost you in the $6K-$10K range.
