914-6 value exceeded 30k!

I've noticed on recent Ebay completed bids, two 914-6 (not conversion) finished with 31k and the other one is almost 39k!
I must say, i never expect to see 914-6 fetching over 30k, it is now approaching 40k! I guess my chance for owning a 6 is getting more and more slim....
how accurate does Ebay represent original 6s market value? Whats your take?

I find that Ebay tends to be representative of World market trends. There continue to be opportunities to pick something up for much cheaper in a local market. I am not surprised by the national and international trends. The parts that are unique to the 6's are getting hard to come up with (like heat exchangers) and while 80-90% of the parts are the same as a 914/4, that last 10% of parts will have the same impact on them that we are seeing in longnose 911's. I personally am not surprised to see them start to take off as well, though I highly doubt anything but the 914-6 GT's ever commanding the kind of prices that 911s's do...

For things like '73 and '74 2.0l's here we continue to see them trade hands here locally for a good 20-30% less than Anderson is saying they are worth in Excellence. It's hard to say if that would transfer over to the 6's here as well. I haven't seen many 6's sell here in Colorado in the last 2 years, but the one that I know about, which was an ex Pat Moyle racecar, went in the mid $20's. That was over a year ago.

I think one of the challenges with assessing values with real 6's is that it's a car that often doesn't make it to the open market. They are one of those cars that often change hands within the 914 community without official ads being placed, or them making it beyond somewhere like 914world where it's still a very contained market.

I think that's a true statement. However, the EU has been buying quite a few over the past years regardless of condition.

$30K is no surprise. I can see the prices continue to rise well past what most would expect or consider. Some may doubt it, but the "true believers" will bump that price up to $50-$60K in the future. It's inevitable really.

The 914/6 has sold for more money than new since 1973. It made Dr. Porsche shake his head in bewilderment too.

Case in point. This car went from $914 to $20k since I got out of bed this morning? I went to work in my garden and it was around $3k. I came in for lunch and BAMMM! And it's not just two guys duking it out. There's 5 or 6 actual bidders. This car is going to go for big money, or at leasty big 914 money.

The six,s are a solid investment. That you can have fun with. Just look at the four prices a couple of years ago. Not many made by today car standards.I would look for the most orginal one you can find.Orginal engine is a must in my book,These cars will bring 50-60K in a few years.Ive got mine and its a keeper...

I was cleaning out the shop this past weekend. In the bottom drawer of my tool cabinet I found a pile of papers from the old days. Found my SCCA log book from '74, a couple of Rulebooks from '74 and '75. a lot of Fiat Abarth stuff, old club racing programs, etc. Found two handwritten receipts: One from '74 where I bought a silver '72 914-6 AND a '68 911 for $6500! The other receipt was from '75 where I sold a red '70 914-6 for $5500!! A couple of years later I made out like a bandit when I sold my black '70 911S for $5000!! Where was my crystal ball when I needed it!!!!!!!!

$6500 in 1974 dollars would be the equivalent of a bit over $30,000 in today's dollars.

$5000 from 1977 is about $18,000 in today's dollars.

Also, if you invested that money that you received for selling all these cars for 30 years, you'd be looking at returns such as this:

$102,504.80 if saved in a short-term asset.
$216,914.38 if saved in a long-term asset.
$265,211.44 if saved in a stock market investment.

These values above use average rates in place for each year of the investment.

Now, also subtract all the costs of maintaining and insuring these cars, and you have more money in your pocket.

I was the one who listed the red 1971 914-6 for sale on ebay. The car puttered out at $27,000.00 in the auction, but sold locally for low $30's. It was a real sale - I got paid. The car is staying in the US and not shipping over to Europe. Matter of fact, most of the serious calls were from enthusiasts here in the US with names like Joe, Mike, Jeff. Not Horst, Deter, Andres.

I had a couple of fellow 914 junkies look the car over in person. One of them is restoring his GT and thought I sold it too cheap - FWIW. The 914 market is strong if the car is justifiable.

I currently own three original sixes. All 1970's. Irish Green with tan, Adriatic Blue with black and Canary yellow with tan. I believe the genuine all matching numbers sixes will be a solid investment and I Have already paid in the high 40's for one which is a show winner. There were very few brought into the USA, most were raced, rusted, and modified. When compared to the 356's which are now becoming unobtainable, the 914-6 is being even more rare. Driving an absolutely mint original six is does not compare to any Porsche from that period.

914-6 prices have remained pretty stable for a long, long time. They've been mid-high teens to mid-twenties for a lot of years. In that range for decades.

Will they ever really take off? I think that's hard to predict. On the one hand, it is a very limited production 6 cylinder porsche with a fairly interesting history.

But on the other hand, it is a car that is not very attractive to most (I like 'em, but I'm weird that way), and while a 6, it's "still just a 914" to a lot of collectors.

Also, while it is a fun car to drive, in stock 110hp form it is kind of limited, and if you upgrade the engine to something more powerful, you ruin the originality of a factory 914-6. Also, a 914-6 is very easy to duplicate, using a 914-4 chassis, and it's easy to end up with a much better car than a factory 6.

So, my guess, given the past history of 914-6 prices, and all things considered, it won't significantly appreciate over the next 10 years.
